5w40-winter, 1540 summer?

did the switched to 5w40 syn this past winter. Awesome stuff
Now its going on summer soon and should i stay with it or go back to 15w40?
I know the benefits of syn But will it be to light of an oil for the hight temps. I am mainly asking this becuase im on 5,000 miles with my synthetic (rotella), nows a good time if any.

I also switched recently to Shell 5w40 synethic and have no plans of going back ever..It has completely eliminated my cold start surging/romping. I would maybe consider it if i lived in the South where it gets real hot but living in PA or Wa like us, it should be just fine.. I also have added a Oil Guard bypass filter system so i can extend my oil changes out to about 7000 miles..

at operating temp. 5-40 and 15-40 or even 30-40 will be the same "weight". the oil weight rating is as such; the lower number means that when cold the oil will not be any heavier than that weight oil at that temp, the high number means that the oil, when hot, will not be any lighter than that weight oil at that temp. so a ?w-40 will always be equal to a 40 weight at operating temp.

so it will be fine to leave it in. i run 5-40 syn all year

Though if you are changing oil at 3000, is there a point to synthetics? Especially at 15 quarts a time?

I have been running Rotella Syn. 5w-40 for the past year and half with no problems. I would stick with it.

By the way, I am still looking for a local Mech. Hazleton is a little too far for me. I'll keep you posted if I find someone closer.

no synthetics would be a waste of money and you are still just wasting good oil at 3k changes.

That is exactly my situation and I plan to switch back to the 15 for the summer...

The synethic is better for your turbo too...especially if you don't wait to let the EGT's cool down before shuting down engine..and it won't cost you any more if you double the mileage between oil changes..
