'89 BII No start

Changed the starter last week...it was on it's way out.
I did have intermittant solenoid (or so I thought) problems also...where I would get "NOTHING" when I turned the key to the "start" position.
Started fine for one week.
Now I get NO click from solenoid.
New solenoid in place.
Battery= Excellent.
When I jump the solenoid with a screwdriver, I get nothing.
I put a 12v. tester on the "start wire" (small wire)that goes to the solenoid.
When I turn the key to the "start" position...I get about 2 volts.
Problem in column?
Someone said there is a "plunger" in the column that can go bad?
I have a whole other column from a '90 BII at my feet if parts are needed.

Any help is much appreciated.
My friends Jeep Wagoneer is doing the identical thing as a matter of fact.

Thanks...I gotta get back to work and all my tools are in my bronco!!!!!!!

Might be a bad battery cable. Have you got a set of jumper cables?

Try this simple little trick to check the battery cables. Connect a jumper cable from the negative post on the battery to any handy spot on the engine like the alternator bracket. Does it crank now?

If not try jumping from positive on the battery to the starter relay.

Hi,
I put a booster pack directly to the hot side of the solenoid and grounded to the block. Started!
Cleaned all connections and fully charged 3 month old BIG battery.
All is well .....for now
THANKS!!

Spoke too soon!!! I knew it!
I fully charged the battery last night. Disconnected it from vehicle.
Left a tester on it overnight....it WON'T hold a charge!!!!!
Alternator is putting out 13.9- 14.2 volts, too!!

Well that battery sure did'nt last very long, but at least the warranty will replace it for free.

Not sure what you mean by leaving a tester on it overnight, whats that about?

Sounds like the battery is bad. Probably a dead cell. Is it a "maintenance-free" or does it have caps on it to check/fill the cells with distilled water? If it's one that you can fill, try topping off all the cells and recharging it and retesting it. If it still doesn't hold a charge, then it needs to be replaced.

It doesn't sound like the alternator has issues, although, I would double check the fusible link and wiring... even on the negative side.

I have a $200 10amp./100amp./300amp. load tester. I can hook it up to a bat. and leave it to see if the needle drops overnight. With ithe bat. unhooked from the truck...this confirms there wasn't a drain from the truck.
Closed cell bat. I ripped it open to check fluids. All cells were full. I could check each cell, but at this point...I'm tossing it and have another going in tonight.
Thanks everyone.

I started the BII yesterday and the starter stayed engaged!!
I shut the ignition "OFF"...motor kept cranking!!!!!!!!!!!
I popped the hood and cut the POSITIVE battery cable!!!!!
Went to my parts truck where I had a spare column.
Replaced the module that the ign. key actuates!!!
5 minute job.
New bat./new solenoid/used replacement column module.
