Alright, I am going to be starting my SAS soon and I am looking at gears. I am replacing the 3.31 in my 8.8 with 4.11 and the same on the new front that I am putting in. ('79 Bronco). I have been looking at hundreds of gears from all manufacturers and distributers and I just don't know what to get. TO me they are all the same, but I know that's not true. I really don't want to spend 2 or 3 hundred bucks on a set of gears and then still buy a install kit. My question is. What is the best (most dependable) low dollar set of gears out there. This will be for the rear 8.8. I have been told to replace the fronts with nothing but dana gears. So what should I get for the rear???
There is rarely any such thing as "best cheap". Like anything else in life, you get what you pay for. If you want cheap, get cheap and be prepared to be let down with imprecise machining, poor steel quality, etc. which will inevitably lead to problems down the road. If you spend $200 or $300 on a set of gears, expect them to outlast the truck.
Look at it this way - you might save $100 on gears by going cheap, but when the ring gear explodes and takes out the ring, pinion, side gears, spider gears, carrier, axles, and axle housing, how much money have you saved?
I am not saying that I want to go cheap. I have found gears like Richmonds for less than 200. I have heard they are good, but I just wanted to get some other opinions. And see if their were any other brands out there.
