My theory is that the recently made flints don't spark as well. I also switched from Ronson flints to Zippo, that may also be the problem.
I thought about this a while and went out and bought some Ronson flints, as I as well have switched to Zippo flints and that seemed to be about when that problem started. I have used the same lighter with the same Ronson flint for almost a week and am yet to have the problems with the lighter sometimes only lighting when it wanted to. Looks like you are on to something, wonder if it carries over to the Zippo fluid as well.
I have always carried a Zippo, armed with Ronson flints and fluid. Collected quite a few of them over the years and, like many other things, the old ones just seem to work better.
I've been having fun reading all of the posts on this topic. I actually live in Bradford PA "Home of the Zippo lighter". I guess having friends and family that work at the Zippo plant has made me feel almost complacment with this lighter. But reading all of the positive and negative posts makes me relaize how just how big this product is!
If any of you happen to go through Bradford PA you should stop at the Zippo Case Museum. They have numerous lighters and knives for sale in the store as well as a geat Zippo history section.
Years ago I worked with a lady who had worked there as did much of her family. I guess it's one of those places of family employment tradition. Always wanted to go to the museum, didn't realize it was still operating, factory included! Maybe this year.
When my grandpa died 6 years ago, I looked on his table that night after the coroner carried him away and saw his Zippo. I've carried it ever since even though I don't smoke.
Bought my first one when I was 14 or 15, because I thought they were cool. Didn't smoke though. That one was grey with a red pinstripe "frame". Got it for 10 bucks. Lost it about 10 years ago.
Got my second one after I lost the first one, brushed steel finish. Well, I overfilled it and soaked the flint so bad it wouldn't light. I left it out to dry for a while, lost track of it, and when I went back to it, it was gone. That was about 5 years ago.
My current one is some sort of polished black finish, with my initials engraved into a circle. Got it from a friend as a wedding gift. Had it since 05. Still got it somewhere in my toolbox.
I have a antique 50's Nesor Hi Fi lighter. Its like a zippo. It has a rebel flag on the front and it also plays dixie. Works like a wind up music box. Works fine and is in fair condition. Anybody know aprox. what it would be worth. I can't find any like it on ebay.

I agree with this guy. I have been their twice one camping trips to the Redhouse campground in the Alleghenies. Its a cool museum, Case makes some great knives also.
