I unpluged my EGR the other day and i saw a huge rise in mileage when i was towing my horse trailer to NJ the other day. Im talking 3 mpg more(17mpg). And when i drove 30minutes to the track to pick my horse up i got 19mpg. I use to get 13.5-14.5 when i was towing and now it does NOT drop under 17. How is this possible? I havent tested it yet with my superchip in high performance but im tempted to see how it runs.
Also i was wondering what the plus side is to unpluging it and what the down side to it is. Ive read many post but im still unsure. Thanks
For '03 / '04 engine builds I have not seen a non-California emission engine have a down side.
Some experience improved MPG and shortened turbo lag. The main purpose, in my mind, is to keep the W.A.R.T. from throwing trash right back into your system.
Soot, loading up the EGR Valve and gluing it in the open position has killed many a fine truck and stuck many turbos.
Mine has been "missing" for the last 25,000+ miles and I have only been in the shop for recalls.
Unplugged mine months ago since I had mine stick open during vacation pulling a 30 foot travel trailer, talk about turbo lag and no power!!! I think it pulls better unplugged
I think that the emissions programming you have is the key to the unplug egr thing. I have an 04 certified in Massachusetts which I think is the same as the California cert. Unplugging my egr valve made the cel light come on and the engine run slow. It ran a lot better with the egr plugged in. WHO KNOWS? Just another mystery question for the 6.0 gods.
I am going to run with what I got, stock, and get a new truck when this one gets fully depreciated or the warrenty runs out.
I reckon you might want to go to our 6.0 Tech Folder. I recommend getting a beverage and snack of your choice and hunker down for a good, albeit long, read.
I was towing 8600 pounds on the highway, and after about one hour, the engine would cough black smoke a couple of times whenever I started an incline. I pulled over on the highway, shut off the engine and unplugged the EGR. The coughing/black smoke immediately stopped.
I have an 03, 6.0 SD, FX4, Crew Cab. I never bothered to unplug the value thinking that the truck was running just fine. It now gets better fuel mileage and takes off much quicker from a dead stop on an incline.
I unplugged my 04 egr @ 9k miles after I had trouble with the egr/ebp. Since then no problems.
I unplugged the 06 @ eleven miles. It hasn't been back to the dealer and has no problems. It is a tad slower to build boost, but runs cooler and cleaner and will never get plugged in again.
