Hi Everyone new to the forum, and this is my first post.
I have a 2006 6.0 and just disconnected the EGR, it seems to pull better from a dead stop and at idle it now sounds like my old 2000 7.3 But the check engine light came on after the second start-up.
I disconnected the batteries and let the capacitors drain off and the check engine light went out.
So how do you keep the check engine light from coming on? Is a programmer the only way?
I just unplugged my EGR about 3 days ago. 05 Lariat 6.0 with 21,500 Km. So far, not a warning light or other problem. Seems a bit louder, runs great, did before too. Will let you know if there is a downside. I hope my mileage goes up, atleast when pullin the RV. I need one of those transferflow tanks.
it seemed to increase my towing mileage ALOT more then when im not towing. I cant believe the mileage the truck is getting. Since i unplugged the egr it doesnt drop below 17mpg. Including city, highway, and towing. When we use to go to NJ and back we would use a little more then 3/4 of a tank. Last week it was just under a 1/4 there and we got home Just barely under 1/2..And i did the mileage on paper and it was a tad over 17
New to the forum and recently purchased an 04 6.0L Ex w/ 36K....also have been reading about the EGR disconnect and my question is this...does the throttle plate have to come out or can I get by w/just disco'ing the sensor??
There are negatives about disconnecting the EGR; I ran my 04 with it disconnected for about 10k miles and saw some positive effects initially but those were eventually outweighed by negatives
-higher temps
-less power at higher RPMs (sometimes I would romp it to get around someone and the truck just did not have that SNAP it had before)
-Louder engine – some people like it louder but I don’t
-warranty issues
My advice is ask an experienced diesel mechanic and see what they tell you, most will tell you if you use a quality fuel and additive and avoid idling the EGR wont give you a lick of trouble.
Mine has now been plugged in for about 10k and that is how it is going to stay.
I agree with the duke regarding less power and louder engine. However the EGR is a double edged sword with warranty. The PSD is covered for 100K and during that time the EGR may malfunction but that is covered under warranty. We are yet to see the results of 100K miles worth of soot built up in the intake and variable vaine geometry turbocharger due to EGR valves and the future repair costs. Would you rather repair it before the warranty expires as well as after or not at all?
JMHO, I keep mine unplugged and she runs cooler EGT's. I don't like breathing exhaust gas and neither does my 6.0
Would still probably have to pop for the $ 100.00 at some point in time.
I have used fuel ads since day one. Popped the plug at 4,000 miles (currently easing up to 30,000) and have never had a problem moving around anyboby in traffic or otherwise. Seat of the britches says less turbo lag but, really couldn't prove it....just feels better.
Like many things with this engine it boils down to a personal choice.
I unpluged mine last night. Took it out for around a 10 mile run. Seemed a lot better even quieter. I stomped it and she went like a bullit, no smoke out the tail pipe like before. Now I can actually spin those big tires of mine. Turbo spools alot faster now. I do have to keep my foot on the brake or it does move on its own now. The spool up is not instant but very quick. I killed it and restarted a couple times and no lite on the dash. Not sure if I have to remove the throttle plate or not. I guess I will check it this weekend. My motor build date is 11/03 so if anyone knows for sure let me know and save me so trouble. Sure hope it will help with my milage. Will keep yall posted.
