Actually it's only 400 miles a week. The job is one week on and one week off. I looked into another car. But it doesnt work out. If I get three times the milage, I save 66 bucks a week. Thats about 3500 a year. I'm sure I could buy something for that, But than theres insurance and upkeep. But the most important thing is I have never driven a boring vehical in my life (unless you count the motorhome) and I dont intend to start now.
Well, 12 mpg with 38" tires aren't that bad. The simplest way to save gasoline would be to drive at 55 - 60, BTW.
I used to have a 300 mile/week commute, too, (my contract ended 2 weeks ago) but with 16 - 17 mpg and a good pay, gasoline prices weren't much of an issue. Of course, now that prices are getting dangerously close to $3 here, I might just have to fix my Pinto SW. But for the time being, my bicycle gets me practically infinite mpg.
Just found this on yahoo: http://news.yahoo.com/s/bw/pi20060426284375
Since this link will diappear after a few days, here's a short excerpt:
"Want to really improve your fuel efficiency? The biggest fuel-burning culprit is frequent accelerations and stops. You see everyone doing it, racing to the next stop sign and slamming on the brakes. It may get you to work faster, but what's the cost? Reed found that people who make quick starts and stops burn up to 37% more fuel than those who coast between lights."
I'd second that. Just modifying my driving habits took me from 8mpg to about 14mpg (75% improvement!), and my truck's still bone *** stock. This was before AND after a tune up, with a tired O2 sensor still in there.
Driving habits help there too. Steady cruise at 65mph can get you several MPG. Driving from Cali to Texas, I was averaging around 17.5-18mpg (!) because I used cruise and set it at 60-65. Any faster than 55 or so is really a waste of fuel, which is why even in Texas where the freeway speed limit is 70, I NEVER exceed 65, and in the year I've owned my Bronco, it's been to or over 70mph only twice - and one of those times I wasn't even driving.
I'm just talking about on the highway crusing 70. So starts and stops dont apply.
IMHO, 70 is too fast for a car with a big frontal area if you care about mpg. Wind drag goes up by the square, so at 75 mph, the air resistance is almost twice as much as at 55. It's no big deal with smaller cars like a Maverick, or a Honda CRX, but the Bronco is a bit bigger than those.
Has anyone put a mass air flow sensor on? Can it be put on a 90' Bronco? They say better MPG in ads. Is that nonsense? I'm not sure what this is. Does it eliminate other sensors like the O2?
I did an oil change to full sinthetic 5-30 from straight 30 and as best as I can tell I got 1/2 MPG increase. I'm going to try to isulate my intake and put on a FIPK system. I will report later.
Come on folks we are talking 1, 2 and 3mpg gains - nothing to be writing home about! "Hi mom! its me just wanted to tell you that bronco of mine yeah the one that costs 160bucks a week in gas to drive to work, well I hope your sitting down and get dad over to the phone as well.......I got a couple extra miles out it this week and had money left over for a Happy Meal!"
Speak for yourself... for some of us (admittingly only a few) a 3mpg increase would be nearly double the milleage and half of the cost of fuel. My 78 gets 7-9mpg and I would surely welcome a 3mpg increase. Infact I hope to get it up to 15mpg with some things a few others have done in the past. 1) aftermarket fuel injection 2) more efficient engine build (cam, compressions, etc.) 3) swap in a ZF 5-speed to get 5 gears instead of 3, and overdrive.
I have to admit 3 MPG would be welcome around me too. I get about 15MPG out of my 77 F-100 w/302 which I'm happy with, but in my mud machine last time I checked it got 4.5 MPG and 7-8 MPG would make me fell alot better, but I can understand why it got so low, but 3 MPG extra through out a 33 gallon tank would save me enough to buy 2 or maybe even 3! happy meals!!! lol
My latest atempt to increase milage is pictured in my gallery. I insulated the intake runners and installed a K+N filter. Also, I piped in some cold air from the front. The stock pipe that goes to the front on top of the rad really doesnt get much fresh air. This idea is not mine. I got it from a old post here. I beleive it was called "frpk for 50 bucks" They have very good instructions in that thred. The only differnce on mine is the insulation. I havent notest any giant improvment in proformance like in that thred. I'm going on a long trip tomarrow and will report on milage when I get a chance.
I checked the milage and got about 1/2 mpg improvment. I had got the A/C fixed, but I knotested that the compressor never kicks off. Do you think this would reduce my milage? I will get a new cyling swicth and check the milage again.
Perhaps the gas you bought was better, perhaps the weather was warm, the moon and stars where aligned or you just needed a tune up.

Next we will be breaking it down to feet to the gallon (FPG), whole crap guys I got an extra 3 feet out of a $200.00 tank of gas!
Perhaps I should head on over to the Doge Neon site and start talking about off roading it, "Dam this thing just isn't hooking up on the rocks, this gas milage is great but frig what good is that if I can't even making it over the curb! Thinking an SAS is in order and some 33" tires"
Again its a fat *** bronco, its a big *** brick going down the raod.
Let's see, I drive 18,000 miles a year, at 13mpg that makes for 1384 gallons and at $3.00 per gallon it makes for $4153 a year for gas. If I can increase mileage to 15mpg that would be 1200 gallons or $3600 a year. A difference of $553 a year between 13 & 15 mpg. In five years it becomes $2765. Perhaps that is chump change to you but even though it won't make me rich I would rather spend that $553 a year on something else.
If you still insist that it is nothing to concern oneself with, then perhaps you wouldn't mind sending me a check for that amount once a year, it is after all a mere pittance.
