Hey guys my 99 PSD has a issue. It started this yestorday. I went to the parts store got back in the truck and the start light wouldn't come on and I tried to start it (thinking maybe the light was blown) and the truck would turn over but would not start.
So after I turned the key several times it finally came on the wait to start light and it fired right up.
Then I go about 3 miles down the street to Home Depot go in for maybe 30 mins. and it did the same thing.
Then I go to landscape a business been there for about a hour and a half had to go it a mower and the truck did it again.
then it never did it agin that night
This morning the truck started up just fine and went filled up started up just fine and I went to see a friend for about a hour and it did it again.
I was told it is the IDM and the PCM, this guy has worked on diesels but isnt a diesel mechanic. The truck does not smoke on start up nor smoke while driving either.
Sounds like it may be the glow plug relay. It is heating up and not operating. This would be why when it is cold and after it cools off the truck starts.
Camshaft Position Sensor. It's mounted about 11:00 position next to the crankshaft pulley, held down with a single bolt with a 6 point 10mm head on it.
Just to keep you updated the truck hasnt done it since I last posted UNTIL yestorday and its doing it almost everytime I turn the truck off but if i wait 20 minutes or so the light will come on and its good. So Im finally going to install the relay. One question where exactly is it located? Thanks guys!
Neither the cam sensor or the glow plug relay have the ability to prevent the wait to start light from illuminating. The WTS will self test for about five seconds no matter what, as long the PCM is powered.
So the PCM could be shot? You guys know more about this stuff than I thats for sure! But if the PCM is bad than wouldn't it be out for good not work and sometimes not? I'm sure I could like a complete idiot but Im trying to learn about these diesels this is a whole new animal to me! Thanks for the patience's and help!!!

With that thought I would be looking at what powers the PCM. Is there a relay or something that runs the PCM that might be sticking?
Does the truck have an aftermarket performance chip? If it does and the chip is loosing contact it might cause that problem. Same thing with the main power harness (104 pin) to the PCM. If that 10mm holddown bolt has come loose the plug could be backing out.
The PCM power relay is the one closest to the firewall in the battery junction box.
Kwikk/Cookie, Any chance this is the fuel heater is going on the fritz = no Wait to start light??? Probably not a blown fuse, since it does start again.Just wondering.

The truck is 100% stock. I will check the bolt and let you know.It hasnt done it again since saturday and I havent replaced anything yet the glow plug relay I got from the parts store has a crack in it and they had to order another one but that wouldnt be the problem though would it?

I don't think so. In order for a shorted fuel heater to kill PCM power it has to blow the fuse. The intermittant nature of the problem tends to rule that out.

I don't believe so. The relays power is coming from the PCM. If the glow plug relay was bad the glow plugs wouldn't work, but the WTS light would still self test anf the truck would most likely start just fine assuming a warm day.
