I have always been under the idea that it came from a story published in 1939. H.P. Lovecraft's "Within The Walls of Eryx" which contains the line, "My route must have been far from straight, for it seemed hours before I was free of the mirage-plant's pervasive influence... When I did get wholly clear I looked at my watch and was astonished to find that the time was only 4:20."

i always thoguht it was cause it was hitlers birthday and also because of the police thing. smoking pot is just stupid if you ask me.
and escecially on 4/20 cause that is the same as getting drunk on new years it's a dang good time to get caught doing it !

Yeah, people can't seem to read these days. I said multipe times there was a lot of myths surrounding it and to google it, and then you even provided a link and still no one sees it.

w/ all that being said its sad and somtimes funny how dependant those dumb idiots get to that junk. for example. my mexican friend (inside joke) usta want to play sports, paintball, camp, and anything out doors. now after the skater kids got him into skate boarding, all he wants to do is mostly get hi, skate or get sex from someone. i saw him after work bout 9:30 - 10:00 pm (4.20) he was walking home from the getto (which is one house in my town) and he was stoned off his a** so i stopped my truck and talked to him. basicaly he asked me if i knew wat day it was and if i wanted some pot course i said no and he ask why not. i told him that its more for him to smoke. well he laughed and walked home. so thats wat that crap does for ya JACK SQUAT

How can you guys badmouth pot smokers, when you've never even seen/smelled/smoked the stuff? Im a regular user, but you would never guess that, even if you knew me for a year. I graduated from HS with honors, got a nice truck, great job, I go fourwheeling on the weekends...pot hasn't effected me at all.
Dont let a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch...

Smoking cigs is chemically addictive where marajuana is not. You don't have withdrawl symptoms.
It's been called "the gateway drug" and rightfully so but many misunderstand the depth of that statement. Many people do start off with marajuana and move on to worse drugs or more alcohol - but those are people who are screwed up to begin with and let themselves fall off the deep end. There are pleanty of users who are under control and lead professional lives and careers - etc.
It's hard to get real factual information about it to know and learn...
There are different kinds of smokers and stoners - some fit the stereotype for sure but many do not...
