Painting Interior

Wooo Hoooo! I got my old username back!

Painting Interior
I'll be painting and carpeting the interior of my Ugly starting this weekend. I'm assuming it's pretty easy to get the seat and the instrument cluster out of the truck, right?

Any secrets I need to know about?

Are you going to paint the metal dash? The kick panels and all the interior metal??

Not hard to do. Gage cluster comes out easy. But, if you are going to paint the metal dash, I think in would be easier taking all th e way out. I totally dissasembled my crew, painted the interior metal with base coat clear. Painted the metal dash out of the pickup. Cuz I wanted the metal part right in front of the vynal dash to be a semi-gloss black, so there will be no glare. As factory.

If you want it better than factory, -paint the upper firewall and the inside of the dash gloss white for visibility whenever you have to work in there.

I'll be painting everything but the floor. New carpet for that. That's a neat trick, using white paint in those hard-to-see areas! I may just do that!

There's no vinyl on my dash, other than a topper (dash pad) The whole truck, inside and out is going to be flat black. May clear coat some flames on the hood and front fenders later. I know a guy.....

Thanks for the tips.

Ug, remember you from about a year or more ago, last time I spent time here. Aside from scuffing all good surfaces with 220 grit, scrub with lacquer thinner to avoid fisheye. Ruffians have been known to occupy these trucks and sometime even SWEAT in them!

Like the flat black exterior idea. Especially if rust/dent free. Need some nice wheels. Still wrestling with flat black interior, could be kinda hot.

Thanks for the tips. I know nothing of painting, other than scale models. I'm torn on wheels. I like the black spoke wheels. Somebody called them NASCAR wheels. As I am not a NASCAR fan, I started to reconsider. I saw some interesting aluminum wheels that kind of looked like a tribal flame motif.

I thought it might be cool to do a thin tribal flame pinstripe in silver or gloss black. Not sure if the sticker would adhere to the flat paint or not...

I want to emphasize what 76swb said about preparation. You must use pre-cleaner, sand it, sand it, sand it, clean it, sand it... I think you get the idea. I painted a truck a few years ago and it turned out great, however, I took some shortcuts on the interior and regretted it. The fisheye is an ugly, almost unbearable site.

Well, 76swb got me thinking... I decided against black for the interior. I'm going with silver. So if I hate it, it's all swb's fault.

This is an ugly work truck guys. I'm really not overly concerned how nice it looks. Just needs to be nicer than it is now.

I will, however take a little time and prepare the surface. Thanks again for all the advice.

I'll do my best to take before and after photos. If it turns out poorly, I'll be sure to take out of focus pictures!

That's kinda funny on the colors. Mine's silver exterior and I'm going all black on the interior. The silver exterior keeps it from getting extremely hot inside. The doors, roof, etc are all going to stay the silver they are becuz I'm not going to mess with them but I'm going to do a semi gloss gunmetal grey on the metal dash and black on the seat, door panels, dash cover pad thingie, visors, and headliner. I've got a great black and silver tribal steering wheel cover and was thinking of doing black and silver tribal on my headliner just for the interior match. Put them side by side and they'd be color opposites...

The idea about white on the bottom of the dash inside is a great idea. It does help to see things much better.

I used to be totally against white as an exterior color. But since I've owned this truck, it was the first white vehicle I've owned, my mind is changed. The difference white makes in the amount of heat absorbed is beyond belief. The truck is a white/green two-tone, but when I have it repainted, it will be all white. It really makes a difference.

We broke 112 F here in around Lubbock and it's the same dry heat. I don't know how cotton lives outside cuz I sure wouldn't want to. I was driving an 85 F150 for years and its was blue and rust on top. I got into my silver 79 last summer and this summer after the 85 was wrecked and I bought the 79 and the temperature difference is amazing! I would definantly go with the silver on another vehicle becuz it looks sharp, it isn't common in that model (the metallic silver at least) and it happens to be one of my favorite colors.
