Buying 1999 PSD

I am looking at trading in my 2001 f150, for a 1999 PSD, 6 speed, 96,000 miles. I have never owned a diesel or a 6 speed before, is there anything i should be looking for or anything you guys can help me with. I am going to test drive it this weekend. Thanks.

I asked the same question 6 months ago. Do a search and you'll find others, but here's the thread I started:

I think most think you should at least try to check the compressor wheel for dusting and the engine for smoke/blow by, and of course maintenance records if available.

IMO you can't go wrong with a 99-01.

I just bought a similar truck, you had some good answers from the Super Duty Forum, as far as things to "know" 15 quart oil changes. You'll be starting out in 1st gear or 2nd, unless you are pulling something SERIOUS.

The one thing that I was surprised by when bringing it back from Cal to MN, was the high idle, if the temp is below let's say 30 degrees, the truck will jump up to 1100 or so RPM if you leave it idling with the parking brake on, happens after about a minute. Will go to normal idle if you release the brake, or touch any pedals. Read the FAQ on the 7.3 motors, it has the info on the coolant additive that you need. If you decide to upgrade the computer, you will be staggered with the extra power, then spoiled. One complaint I have is the throttle becomes super sensative when up at the highest power levels. You can just spend a couple of days just reading this forum to answer almost all your questions. Just Sunday I learned about replacing the sender to solve my rear ABS problem.

Every time someone complains about the internet, I remind them of forums like these
