Well I got the turbo off my 97 psd last night. what a pain in the a**. I removed it to fix my ever growing exhaust leak behind it. What I discovered is that the collector is cracked.
Does anyone have a better source than the dealer for these?
Also in inspecting the turbo I found that the compressor wheel's leading edge looks a little worn ou to me. It doesn't have any chips in it but has slight radius like it has worn down a little over the years. Should I change it too or is this normal.
Any other recomendations of what to do while I have the turbo off would be greatly appreciated too! Thanks!
you might do a net search for a turbo rebuild kit. Im only vaguely familiar with them but know they are cheaper than dealer parts. Check your intake and boots for leaks/cracks. The wear on the blades is likely from dust hitting them.
What you describe re: the compressor wheel is what's often referred to as a "dusted turbo" as Tx_Atty indicated. I replaced my turbo when it looked like that; gained 3psi boost right off the bat.
Whole turbo. Got a heck of a deal on a new one ($425 on eBay). Turns out that one of the ears from the center housing to the turbine backplate was broken off, so replacement was required.
While you have it off I would check all of the fuel system mostly the pump is much easier to replace with the turbo off. I would also clean out the valley so when leaks start you can locate them easier. Good luck on getting her back together.
When the pump goes bad there is a small weep hole that leaks it is on the bottom you can see it with a inspection mirror. I replaced mine when I had it off just because all the lines to it were dry rotted and it was about time for it to go with alot of mileage. If you don't have the funds to do it now is nothing to worry about was just a thought on something that is easier to change with the turbo off. Good luck
