Has anyone ever run cam timing advanced 4 degrees in an early 460? I have a later model that from the factory is run at 4 degrees retarded (no pun intended) from the factory for emmissions, now I want to run it 4 degrees advanced for low end torque (I tow a heavy trailer), but I am getting a ton of disagreement if it will work.
I know that many aftermarket cams come with 4 degree advance built into them, so I am curious if I can run a stock cam with 4 degree advanced Edlebrock gearset with out any problems like predetination etc...
Please any one with feedback...I need to hear from you...

Hey Dan-
I'm about to do the same thing for my 360, but I'm going ahead with a cam also.
Anyway, cam timing and ignition timing are two separate things. Predetonation comes into play with advanced ignition timing. I don't believe you should run into any problems by using the advanced setting on the timing set. You will have to adjust your ignition timing when you do have it all set up.
Good Luck- let us know when you do install the set and how you like the setting.
You do have to be careful running advanced gear sets with performance cams. Many cam have an advance built into them, and then you can run into trouble advancing your timing gears as well. You could, with out realizing it be advancing your cam timing the equivalent of 7 or 8 degrees, which is too much.
I am wonderring if a stock cam can run 4 degrees advanced with out any problems. some say yes, some say no. Hmmm.
I am by no means an expert on 385's but have read that the most sensitive area in camming one of these is in the intake opening point. For best all around performance it should fall between 40 and 50 degrees before TDC. Comparing it to your stock specs should tell you if advance is appropriate. If you do advance it, I don't think you should have any problem with piston to valve clearance depending on the lift.
You're absolutely correct. My paperwork for my new cam says NOT to use the advanced settings on my gears. But Edelbrock does advertise that you can use their timing set on a stock cam. At any rate, it is your stock timing set that is retarded 4*, not your cam. So with Edelbrock's setup, you can time your valves to straight up 0* or advance the timing 4*.
If there is any kind of a problem with this, I think Edelbrock would have included any cautions in the directions. Just to be on the safe side, though, give them a call and ask for sure. They might have had some complaints or issues brought up before they could update their printing.
I would still like to hear from anyone who runs stock cam with the 4 degree advance gear set. I am towing a heavy trailer and need all the low end grunt I can get, but some have said I will suck valves and eat pistons.
Dosn't quite make sense to me since performance cams do alright and they are advanced, but experience is king!
What do they mean by suck valves and eat pistons? I just looked up the specs. on a stock 460 cam and their pretty lame. Don't see how anything could get in the way of each other. If that's what they mean, just set up the cam advanced and check the clearances.
If they are talking about detonation, than that's entirely possible with these short cams depending on your compression ratio. Then I'd do what you're doing, gathering first-hand info. Don't know how much response you'll get here though, pickups didn't get the 460 until '74. Good luck though, I'd be interested in the final outcome.
