After reading a few posts about the oil filter on the flathead V8s, am i reading right that it only filters about 10% of the oil? If so, i'm thinking about just taking it off. If i do away with it, do i just plug the block where it was hooked up?
Also, anyone know if there is a bracket available anywhere to mount a 70s alternator on my 51 F3 flathead?
Still waiting on my new water pumps from Napa. Tracking says another week.Got the 5/8 pully and new SS bolts today from Speedway Motors. That was the fastest shipping i ever saw.2 days. Tested all the gauges and they all work fine. Going to tackle the gas tank tomorrow i think. Just reading the posts and thought i'd see if anyone had any thoughts about my questions.Guess i'm thinking out loud.

I don't know about the 10%. I had not heard that. That's not much filter capacity but if it were my engine I'd want to filter what I could...even if only 10%. I'd leave the filter on.

Just ribbing ya' I would keep the oil filter, as Vern stated 10% is better than 0%. I had a flathead straight 8 in a 49 Pontiac that did not have an external oil filter. the engine was designed with a baffle system in the oil pan that was supposed to reverse the flow of oil several times which was supposed to allow the large chunks to fall out and and settle. According to an old service manual that I read you never had to mess with it at all unless you rolled the car over in an accident.............nice huh?

I've run without the filter and now run with one. It does only filter a small percentage of the oil at any one pass, but does eventually see all of it.
If you run without, and some guys do very successfully, plan to change your oil every 500 miles to protect your engine.
This was just too much bother for me as my truck is a daily driver and often sees that many miles in a week. So I put the filter back on a few years ago and change the filter element each time I change the oil. NAPA Gold 1006 is what I use.
Guess i'll just leave the filter alone. Its not hurting anything. I spent a few hours trying to figure out how to make a bracket for a 78 ford alternator to use on the flathead. I'd like to use it because i already have it and i cant spend a lot of money right now. Just enjoying playing around with the old truck and trying to keep my brain from loosing its charge. Gonna see if i can figure out how to make a picture gallery. Not sure what the deal is about hiding pictures. Gonna check again.

I mean the filter is there for a purpass & as Bobby states the oil will be all filtered eventually as it continually keeps going through again & again.

If you remove filter, at least put sheets of flat earch magnets on the pan, you wont see them and they do hold the shavings after they settle. Rare earth mag is very strong.
Took aook at that site. Lots of nice stuff on there but that bracket it for mounting a GM alternator. Looking to mount a 78 Ford alternator on mine. Glad to get another good site though.
I understand about trying to run what you have and being broke. Ask anyone around here, they can tell you that I am probably one of the biggest tightwads around. I don't have alot of cash or disposable income, basically I scrounge and save my pocket change and pennies and when they add up to an amount then I can buy some parts. I am a big fan of doing things the old fashioned way with blood, sweat, and ingenuity. Thge only thing I can afford to give away is my time ( and even that is a precious comodity). I think that the only difference between me and a professional is practice and experience.
I salute you for trying to make your ford alternator work. Stick with it, you can do it. Brackets can be a pain in the neck to fabricate. Don't be afraid of failing a few times and having to start over, in the long run you can make it owrk and have the benefit of saying " I did that"

I did that!
Rigged up a bracket today for my Ford alt. Looks pretty solid and i didn't have to hack up the old generator mount so i can have the option of putting it back to original if i ever decide to try a restore later on. Looks a little ragged but i just want to get it all wired up right now then i'll make a nicer one later. Picture of my truck are in mi galery. (I did that too). Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions.
