hey guys and gals...
please help....
i have a 02 f350 with a 5.4 ...today someone told me my lites were on so i checked and they were, but the switch was off. smelled burning plastic and rubber then began to see smoke from the fuse panel. i took it apart after work and found out that a plug behind the panel(2nd in from right) was melted and the panel connectors were stuck in the plug. my question is what would cause this and is there a way to fix it...if so how? i left the plug unpluged, but the truck wouldnt start, so i plugged it back it for now. im very pissed off about this and for obvious reasons, fire etc, i need to get it fixed. thanks in advance for the help...chris
You don't have a leaky windshield do you ?
Only way to find it is to pin out each wire to ground and see if theres a short somewhere .
Did you have any work done lately on the vehicle?
someone asked about the leaky windshield before because my fuse for the pcm keep alive memory was blown. but it hasnt rained here in a while...i did put a keyless entry remote in about 4 wks ago. but i checked the wire colors and none of those were used in the install.
what do you mean by "pin each wire to ground?" ill have to try that...im hoping i dont have to take it to the dealer. any other options? thanks
chris
you need to get yourself a good DMM(digital multimeter) and see which wire in the plug is grounded out. then you need to trace that wire and find the ground.
With A schematic ,you can test each wire, knowing its function to see if it has continuity to ground or a short.
When puting in the keyless entry did you splice in somewhere or use a factory harness to do the install?
Rich
i spliced into the power wire, and 12 volt ignition wire. the tech from the company told me the wire colors and where to spice. i checked to see if anything was interfering, but i dont seem to see anything. ill check with my meter for continuity before i purchase another box. does anyone know if you can buy the male plug for that clip? both the plug and the box are melted...thanks alot for the quick replys...
It is not uncommon for circuits to be under sized from the factory. I have seen it several times on ford. The early ford taurus was famous for the ignition switch harness to melt in the steering column. Usually it is cause by a slightly loose terminal in a connector. I would try the salvage yard for the harness or try the dealer for the correct terminal. Good luck.
i think im going to have to take it to the dealer... im very good with working on them, but now the check engine lite is on? so i think there is some major problems...i will try a junk yard first about the parts...thanks
here is the problem....the brake pressure control switch leaked on the pcm which in turn connected the pins from the fuse connector directly to ground. currently $600. the dealer told me it could have been way worse by the fluid frying the pcm or starting a larger fire. the switch also caused the check engine light to come on. im pretty upset and frustrated right now...this truck may just stay at the dealer...later
if though it sucks at least you know what it was! grounds can be the worst thing that could happen just trying to find them can be a nightmare never mind the fire it could have started. consider yourself very lucky!
