4.0 Sohc?

Anybody know if I were to get a 4.0L SOHC with tranny if it would bolt in to the transfer case? Are the lengths different? Anybody know? Thanks.

Find out what TC the doner has. If it's a BW 1345 then you're in good shape.

Most of the SOHC engines are from 2wd vehicles. So in that regards.. what do I do? I'm running out of time and wish I could find some place that just had all the info I need lol.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to swap tranny and engine out, with computer and all the accessories, I just need to know from anyone if this combo will bolt in and work with the t-case currently in my 90 Bronco II (auto t-case).

You could run a divorced TC but ours will need a trans that can bolt to it. I'm bored and killing time right now so I'll see if I can dig anythign up for ya, lol.

Well it looks like the most common TC for SOHC 4.0 is the BW4405. So the 2 questions that I can think of is 1) Do the BW1354 / BW1350 TCs (ours) share the same pattern and splines as a BW4405 2) They look physicaly close, can you snag a whole package, engine-trans-tc?

I might be able to, but adding a TC into the mix adds cost. I think I'm just going to go with an OHV 4.0 with tranny since I know it bolts up. This is hard work contacting all these salvages.

I found a write-up on another site that says the BW4405 and the BW1354 are both 5 bolt patterns with 25 spline shafts. The write-up said they will interchange. So it looks like if you find a 4.0 SOHC with 4x4 trans you'll be in business, you just don't want an AWD trans because they had a different TC pattern and would require an AA 1354 adapter and some trans work. On the other hand it sounds like if 2WD is your only option AA may have a solution.

Good Luck man

So if I find a 4.0 SOHC with 4x4 t-case and tranny with computer and all.. to take it all, including t-case from the donor? Or can I get just the engine and tranny and that will bolt in? I don't know for sure how this works lol.

Sounds like you just need the engine and trans. A 2WD trans will have a different tail shaft and extention housing compaired to a 4WD trans so you just need to make sure the trans is coming from a 4WD vehicle. That 4WD trans will then bolt right up to your current Transfer case.

Just incase, below is a pic showing what I mean. The 2WD trans has nothing to mount to on the rear section, it's made for the drive shaft to install right into it. The 4WD trans (in green) has a housing that the transfer case bolts too. These should be the exact transmissions you will be looking at when shopping for a SOHC with a 5-speed. If one was going auto the rear sections would still look the same.

Well now I have a clean cut answer lol. I think for what I'm doing I'm just going to go ahead with a 4.0L OHV from a 94 Explorer. It will bolt in directly and I won't have problems with gauges. I want to do the SOHC since it has more power, but it would require too much work for me right now. Maybe some time in the future when my current tranny dies, otherwise I'd just be throwing away a good tranny that I've spent $600 on last year. I plan on doing a full write-up about this to help people that are as confused as I was about the swap. Thanks all.

The SOHC is quite a bit wider and may not fit under the hood. The M5OD will bolt up to a 4.0 SOHC. The A4LD should too, but it would need a stand alone computer to run it. If you could snag a engine and trans combo from a 4WD Ranger it would bolt right up to your T-case. The Rangers all come with a 1354. Problem would be shifting it. It has a different setup in the computer. You would probably need to convert to a manual t-case.

Food for thought

Do the OHV and SOHC engines share the same bellhousing? The M5R1 (M5OD-R1) came in a few different patterns. Actually I think the SOHC M5R1 was a HD series.
