New owner of 2001 Ranger XLT, 4.0 SOHC, 2WD, Overdrive Auto, Like to know how reliable this engine/drivetrain package is? So far I have 25K and seems as good as new! What can I expect?
I have 41,000 on my 01 SOHC 4.0 4x4. So far its been a good, and powerful engine. I did have the timing chain TSB done, the noise is still slight but doesn't seem to cause a problem.
I think most ranger owners can get easily over 200k if it is maintained and driven normal. This is probably with any drivetrain engine combo. It hink the 4.0 with the 2wd should be pretty good, not to heavy of a truck, you arent pulling around the extra weight of the 4x4 everywhere you go.
listen for a rattle when the engine is cold. If you hear this take it to the dealer if your still under warranty . Other than that i have no complaints. Just don't expect great gas milage
I just took a trip in my 2002 4.0l sohc 2wd ext cab of 2600 miles. averaged 21.8 mpg with the cruse set to +5 above the speed limit.
I think thats pretty good mileage.

I love my Ranger. 2001, 4.0, 4x4, 4.10 and 5 speed tranny. I have plenty of power towing my dad's boat and the atvs anytime. Only bad thing I've experienced is around town driving. Straight up driving around town I get only 12.5-13 mpg, although I do have a big slab of lead in my foot . Highway on cruise though I average about 19.5 unloaded and 17 when I have the boat or ATVS.
BTW I have 42k on it and only had to do normal maitenance (oil and filter changes)
As long as you change the oil regularly and don't beat it to death, it should last a very long time. Main thing is doing the oil changes on a regular basis.
