Does anyone know if the hardware to install the Ford bed extender is available as a kit, or will I have to fight with the local parts guys to order each part individually? As far as I've read here, through related posts I'll need four grommets, and two screw in posts, is this right?
Do the bed extenders get installed over the top of the factory plastic bedliners, or will I have to cut away the part that over laps the area where the extender gets installed? I thought about using a hole saw and just cutting appropriate sized holes in the bedliner to allow for the grommets and post.
Any help would be appreciated.
I had a cage left from a trade in truck that I had and installed it on the new truck I got. pretty much bought the bolts/posts (2 total) that screw into the bed and act as the mounting points from the parts dept., about $20.00 I think. Then took a hole saw to my bedliner, you can pull back the bedliner just a lttle so you can see the preinstalled mounting points for the bolt in's and drill in the right area. All you need is a star head socket to screw the mounting posts. Pretty simple, done in about 10 minutes.
I just installed an OEM extender in my 06 SCREW this past weekend. I noticed the parts all came in one sealed bag with a part number on it (damn if I didn't think ahead to save the bag....sorry!). I am pretty sure it is a kit. Check EBAY. Actually I have seen the kits listed on there just by luck. I had heard the kit is about $35. Not sure how accurate that number is. You are correct with the part types you list...two studs like car door strikers, and four plastic grommets. The studs self tapped (not sure if they were suppose to, but they did for me without any trouble) into some soft metal material in two holes in the vertical uprights where the tail gate closes. I used a metric seat belt star socket. I would hit up an Advance Auto or something like that after I left the dealer with the parts kit so you have everything at home when you are ready to start. The four plastic gromets tapped into two holes with a small hammer...one above the stud, and one below the stud...on each of the tailgate uprights. Pretty simple operation. Took me all of 20 mins I think. The extender just slipped right onto the ends of the studs and rotated in and out of the bed to the gate like a half round arc, very nicely. My unit had a spring lock to holds the extender onto the end of the studs. Nice design. Since my tonneau cover is left on all year, I just push the spings in to release the extender off the studs, pull it out and turn it end for end so it is now sitting on the tailgate and drop it back onto the studs. There is a handle on either side that slids a little teet into the gromet to lock in in place so it does not bouce. The top gromets are for when the extender is out on the tailgate. The bottom grommets are for when the extender is tipped in. With my cover off it flipped in and out very easily. And it locks in pretty secure when the lock handles are pushed into the grommets. I am not sure if you can see the holes you need to in the tailgate closure uprights or not. You should be able to. They face one another...three holes in each side. And yes, the extender does install over top of your bed liner. I don't have a liner, I bought a mat. It works fine with that as well. There are rubber feet on the tips of the extender that touch the bed and tailgate. These give way for the space for a liner or mat. Hope this helps.
I have not seen an installation kit for the extender except for the one that comes with the dealer installed assembly. That has a pkg with all the attaching hardware.
The individual part numbers are YL3Z-84286A54-AA for the grommets, at $6.93 ea. and the 2 pivots W707381-S900, at $10.00 ea. from your local Ford dealer. These are retail prices and most of you hopefully will know someone at the dealership. They can get you a break on the price. I bought my extender from a customer for $150.00 but I didnt have the T-50 Torx bit to remove the pivots. The bushings and the pivits ran me $40.00 so I came out light at $190.00 total versus the 465.00 Ford retail.
Thanks PartsKen! I just bought one from EBAY and ran into the same problem. Actually did find a kit for the '03 and earlier models, but the newer models did not offer a kit number. Not sure if the older and newer parts are the same, but I am starting to believe they are. Want to find a new truck with bed extender and take a look firsthand.
Clarifying my prior post, I did not find an '03 kit, but did find the breakout of part numbers which are apparently not available for the '04 and later models. However, seems all of the P/N's are the same with the exception that the later models do not require the two nuts. Not being sure due to conflicting posts I read, I ordered the nuts as well just to be safe. The unfortunate thing is that I purchased from my local Ford Dealer and sound the following prices (after receiving):
2 pivot bolts: W707381-S900 ~$10.00 each
1 pack of 2 nuts: W520414-S309 ~$3.93 each (x2)
4 grommets: YL3Z-84286A54-AA ~$7.93 each
Grand total ~$60. Ouch!!! Oh well live and learn. Should have ordered online per another post, but since I was a little uncertain still about the P/N's...
All of the above works with the '06 F-150 except you do not need the nuts as the bolts are designed as selftapping. The hole has about a 1" diameter by 1/4" thick puck welded to the back side of the sheet metal similar provide the reinforcement needed for threading.
