I am considering the purchase of a 1967 ford F-250 in good shape. It is a 390, 4 speed 4x2. I need a 4x4 so I am looking into the conversion. I can get any complete axil I want for $165 at a local junk yard along with any t-case for $50 and d-shafts for about $100. Will the traction bars for I beam front end bolt up to a dana 44 or dana 60 front end? I would also be purchasing now springs from Jeff's Bronco graveyard about 4" lift in the fron and 4 or 5 in the rear. If the tracition bars do not fit I suppose I could get some for cheap at the junk yard. Do I need an adapter to atatch a NP 205 to a NP435 tranny?
That is not a good idea, as the frames are different widths.
If you like the 67 buy it, then find a late 70s 4X4 or newer if you are creative and move your sheet metal over to it. Stay away from early 80s, mid to late 80s and above are good candidates. I have a 86 4X4 that I am planning to see how 66 sheetmetal will fit on. I am now shopless so it is parked.
The 67 cab and front clip will bolt up on up through 79 chassis.
I think I just might buy it, it's the only thing around in my league$$$. I suppose I could make it a superflex 4x2 with I beams and use raw torque to rock crawl. If I could not get a hold of a 4x4 frame and running gear coldn't I just weld on perches for the traction bar off a bronco or do the traction bars have to come close to the inside of the tires when you flex? I suppose I could weld angle iron outward from the frame to mount the traction bar and perch. I would run coil springs up front and keep the 9" or what ever it has in back with good flexing leafs. I do not have room for two frames any way. I think I will have to do it the hard way.thanks...
AHhhh a rock crawler, the things we leave out of our posts when we ask for help.
Your 67 probably has a 352 in it rather than a 390. It can be a 390 but you can't tell by looking at it.
Buy the truck if you have the money and like it. I suggest you pose your crawling questions over on the 4X4 forum. They shuld be much more helpful on that issue. IMHO
I've been contemplating the same idea. I don't have the f250 2wheel though. I have a f150 4x that I made into a short box and wish I had a 250. been thinking that a guy could use the 2x coil perches and then convert the other needed brackets to the 4x pieces. the 2x trailing arms won't bolt to the 4x axle. spose you could fab some type of bracket to make it happen. the 2x arms are shorter than the 4x arms, not a plus if you plan on rock crawling it. I think the steering box works different on the 2x. the cross member under the engine would have to be modified to clear the axle to. most of all, I think it is do-able. just make sure it is strong and safe.
