What are the benifits of haveing your Cat gutted or running your truck without a cat? I've read a lot of people on here haveing a gutted cat or non at all and my dad used to take his cat off over the summer to haul things around with, like our camper.
Also I read that if you take your cat off and keep it off it's better to use diesel engine oil because it protects the engine better? Is there any truth to this?
From the factory my truck had two, one of them plugged, so I had it gutted, and a aftermarket one installed further back. It passed California Smog fine.
I use diesel oil in my truck now with the Cats on. Motorcraft 15w-40. It shouldn't shorten the life of the cats all that much.
If you go to the oil and lubrication forum, they will be able to tell you why you should run diesel motor oil rated CI+4 and SL in your truck instead of the newer SM oil. The SM oil has been known to cause lower engine failure on older vehicles, according to some posts on that forum.
Dont just gut a cat(sounds gruesome don't it ) it will create extra turbulence in your exhaust system. While my truck doesn't require cats, my wifes Capri does, I had header flanges welded to the cat and the pipes, and a piece of straight pipe with flanges as well. This way I can leave the cat off until I need to pass a smog test, I just undo 6 bolts, and install the cat. I don't see what difference having a cat on your truck would have to do with oil weight.
The EPA mandated that the catalitic converters needed to last longer, in the newer vehicles. The additives in the oil tend to plug them up with normal use, it's not the oil weight. The newer SM rated oils have some of the added lubricants removed so the catalitic converters last longer. Hence the SM rated oils are not as good, and have been linked to cam failiure in older engines designed for a older rated oil. According to some of the posters on the Oil and Lube forum. The rating of the oil is printed on the bottles.
Diesel oil is rated for CI-4 and SL. SL is an older gas engine rating, and has the lubricant additives that the newer SM oils don't. Better oil for an older engine.
