This is my first post, but I have been lurking for quite some time trying to get a feel for this era of trucks. I have been watching the classifieds and came across a 1975 Ford F250, 4wd, auto, and it has a "new" 428 cj under the hood. I am somewhat familiar with the 428 cj in cars, but how should it perform in a truck? Is there anything in particular I should look for to make sure that it really is a 428 cj. And are there any inherent problems with the 428 cj that I should know about before I seriously inquire about this truck. Any and all information is appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time.
Thanks for the quick reply and sorry about the title. About what kind of gas mileage (on average) should this truck get with the 428 cj (I know it wont be good and I don't expect to be, but I would like an idea about where it might be)? And what octane should be used? Thank you for your input, I don't want to go into this deal too ignorant if I can avoid it. My dad is a mechanic and can help me check it out and make sure that things appear to be in good order, but he is (sadly) a chevy guy and doesn't know as much about Fords.
That engine required Premium fuel in its stock form.
At least 98 Octane
Let's verify the engine first
I assume the engine is a 4v with vacuum secondaries.
IIMO, Depending on which carb is on it, that 4v's are better on fuel unless one keeps putting their foot into the secondaries than 2v carbs are.
The reason is the size of the primaries vs the 2v openings.
There are so many variables regarding gas mileage I can't give an accurate figure.
