Thumbs down question about return lines

I have an air leak in my return lines somewhere. I have been searching the forums and noticed the fix about the return line between #1 injector and the fuel filter. I still have that line, and plan on blocking it tomorrow when I can get the parts to do it. The question is this, could I be leaking fuel from this? I know I have a fuel leak from the puddle I have under the truck, approximately where it would drip from this line, when the truck is running. I just noticed it this morning, but have been having the hard starting problems (starting and dying and then cranking for 15-20 seconds to get started again) for a couple of weeks. It has been getting worse. I'm hoping this could be the problem, but if not, would it be the fuel rail assembly? Is this something that would be stocked at the local ford dealer (the plastic T's, o rings and fuel lines)? Also, what do you use to replace the fuel return line back to the tank selector, it seems to have a special fitting? Sorry for the long post. Thanks

You can go to a normal parts house and get a replacement return lines kit, I'm not sure what they called it but I used it not too long ago. It came with all the return lines around the injectors and was simple to replace. You just pull the injector plugs from the IP and pull off all the old rubber lines, clamps, and plastic T's and replace them with the new ones. I ordered mine from O'Reilly's.

Check the area for a leak from the drain valve on the filter base, manual lift pump and rubber hose attached for leaks. There are also rubber seals inside the cap nuts on the steel lines to and from the filter. Visit ... http://www.intellidog.com/dieselmann/idi.htm and look for air/fuel leak points on the filter.

You might have a leak from the main lines to and from the fuel tank. Check these lines very carefully. I found mine leaking under a white fuel line clip on the frame under the cab area.

Well, I capped off the return line from #1 injector, and it seems to have gotten rid of the hard to start problem. After plugging the line and the fuel filter header(?), I started the truck to look for leaks. It is bubbling around the #1 injector. I bought all the parts needed to change out all the fittings and lines around the injectors, new o rings, t's, and hose. I'm going to change them out tomorrow night. I would like to change the rubber lines running from this back to the tank, but I'm not sure what I need to use. Can I just use rubber fuel line for this too? What do I need to use for connecting to the fuel selector on the frame rail, it appears these lines have a special fitting on the end? These lines are not currently leaking, but they look to be plastic, and they are old. I figure it would be good to just get them all changed at once. Thanks

When I replaced the supply and return lines on my 85 F250 last Fall, I used regular fuel line form ABC auto parts. I cut the old 'plastic' line away from the fittings and pushed the new fuel line on. The Ford OEM fittings have a barb-style connection for the fuel line, so the new line went right on. I used new spring-type fuel line clamps, and it looks (and works) great!

The hook-up on the tank end is kind of a pain to get to. Fortunately, we have a lift in the shop, so I was able to work under the truck standing up. Dirty job, but really worth it!
