Custom Turbo

Ok, i dont know if i will be getting that used turbo they guys dad isnt sure they should take it off or not. What i am wondering is, is it possible to build up your own turbo system from used parts like a psd turbo, home made manifold collector, used downpipe, etc. Has anyone done this?? Im pretty sure i could find an old turbo for pretty cheap and then weld up the other stuff but am wondering is it worth the trouble for the 1000 or more dollars id be saving?

Possible and worth it are two different things.

Anything is possible with enough cash and determination.

If you take a serious look at the amount of room you have to work with and all the oil system, exhaust system, CDR system and intake plumbing that has to be done in that small area it is going to take more than just welding things up.

I have a lot of metal tools that I own.
My neighbor has a muffler shop with a pipe bender that I can use anytime.
I also can use a machine shop with all the equipment you can think of that I can use.

I bought my turbo system, it was cheap at 2000 dollars.

I was just asking cuz i saw online that STS turbo system wich is remote mounted, if you look at the pictures it looks like it could easily work under one of our trucks. I dont mud or nething so i wouldnt have to worry about clogging the filter and what not with mud. Just curious though, probably going to buy a used or new banks kit or ats wichever i can get cheaper. Like you say though theres not room to work, thats why i was asking about it cuz it looks like a pain to get to parts that need fixking with an ats or banks system. The cheapest i have found was a hypermax but i dont want a non wastegated turbo!

a ps turbo can easily boost above 20psi and would need at least reduce compression pistons to handle the numbers along with some head studs and the charged air will get hot easily without an intercooler(like 300F hot). A turbo below the engine will need some creative thinking for the oil flow to the turbo. The cost may come out slightly cheaper than a new aftermarket kit, but the time and effort involved will make me lean towards one of the big 3 turbos available.

i have thought this system well over a few times and my next truck is going to have a custom turbo system just like a sts system i kno i can build it cheap. a turbo off ebay for 300 bucks is what im gunna try and exhaust tubing i can buy any size from my local shop and bend it myself with a torch, as for oil ill Tee off of my oil sender for supply and run a line to my oil pan for the return. and make some kind of wastegate system so as not to go over 15 psi. and intake i will use smaller tubing and an ATS snail like turbo intake. as for exhaust Dual stacks im thinking 5" into the turbo and 5" straight to the stacks. I should be doing this by fall so i will report on how it goes.

Yah, finally someone agrees with my thinking. The STS systems look really simple, and are compact. Most of them mount at the rear of the cars where the exhaust outlets are but i was thinking, theres plenty of room up under the truck next to the frame rails. As for oil, if you look at the sts systems, they have what looks like an oil pump and lines going from the VC's to the turbo and back. All of you say time is an issue, well im 17 in high school, dont use my truck for work, and have 3 months over the summer to figure it out. My dad is friends with a muffler shop owner, and they have dumpsters full of stock exhaust tubing wich im sure they will sell for cheap. If someone gives them more then scrap prices which is still cheep theyre sure to sell it. I was thinking of the ebay route as well but i have one question, does it have to be a Diesel turbo?? As for head studs and gaskets, if my AC isnt up n running by june i aint driving my truck at all so i wont have a problem with pulling the engine to replace those. I e-mailed STS yesterday and asked them if they plan on developing a kit for diesel trucks, specifically the NA diesels, and about theyre universal system. Is it possible to just by the banks or ats exhaust manifold pipe and then mount up your own turbo? the turbo is prbably the major cost in these systems anyways and if you can get one for 2 or 300 and just by the other stuff seperate im sure it could save u money.

haha i guess only us teenagers think on the creative low cost side lol!! I think im going to e-mail the guy from banks, he helped me out last time i had questions. Have you figured out what kind of turbo etc u are going to use? PM me and maybe we can do some searches on parts like tubing and stuff and come up with a design that would work for not only us but others as well. Do you use the Next generation board any? Ill post something on there and see if neone our age is interested as well. Let me know!
