2000 High Revs on Startup

I have a 2000 5.4L that when it starts goes up to about 1500 rpm, stays there for a 15 seconds, then drops down to about 650 or 700. In another thread I read that the butterfly valve on the throttle body may be sticking or dirty to cause this. I pulled the throttle body when adding a spacer and made sure everything was clean, and it was, so that was not the problem. Has anyone else seen this? Is it normal? What can I do to resolve this if it is not? Doesn't this cause wear to the engine? Any help would be appreciated.

I think mine has always spun up to about 1200 on startup and then settles back down. I take it this is a 'new' behavior on yours?

High Revs

Not necessarily new, just did not do that on my 97 F150, and I bought the Expy used, so maybe just a little paranoid.

the factory presets them all to rev up to 1200 rpm or so. you may have a bad IAC which is causing the extra 300 rpms. but the stock tach is also not very accurate.

Thanks for the reply. I have been watching it lately and it seems to go up to about 1600 rpm upon startup and then drops to about 1100 a few seconds after, then settlesw down to about 700. If this is the way it is supposed to be, I can live with it, like I said in earlier post I'm probably just paranoid.

I did notice yesterday mine will jump to about 1300-1400 rpms when it first fires (cold startup) then after a couple of seconds it will settle to about 1100 rpms for about 10-12 seconds then down to 700-800. It has always started this way, so I don't think you have a problem with yours.

What kind of spacer were you adding to the throttle body and why?

I added an Air Raid Throtle Body Spacer to hopefully increase the mileage. I have not driven it enough tosee if it helped, but it does seem more responsive. I may have fallen victim to hype, I'll let you know after a couple of more tanks of gas.
