Poll: Sythetic vs Dino

Steve here... i'm sure I'm beating a dead horse here, but here goes...
How many of you use synthetc motor oil
How many of you use Dino or conventional motor oil

Just a side note. A good friend of mine just traded in his '97 F150 V8 4X4, with 352000 miles... He had Mobil 1 in it from new... the motor had never been apart. He now owns an '06 F150 4X4 which now has Mobil 1 in it also.

Asumming gassers....

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a 5w20 or 5w30 (even M1 5w30, which is really a heavy 5w20 anyway) that does a better job than MC 5w20 in a modular motor.

Here's a link to one of my UOA's on a '04 F150 5.4L.

Gobbs and Gobbs of similar UOA's on BITOG from Ford modular motors.

Castrol GTX since 24xxx miles now has 186xxx miles on it. The valve covers have never been off. I change oil and filter every 2500 miles.

I've read that there is very little benifit to running full synthetic in summer in truck motors. I run Kendall full synthetic in winter in MN with my 99 V-10, since it is parked outside. I use the Firestone Syn Blend in summer. 143,000 and no problems except the header studs popping off - now have the banks headers and no stud breakage.

Syn been my religion since 1980. Syn went into all my personal vehicles since that time and eventually worked it's way into the wife's cars and even my yard equipment.

However I will say dino is much much better than it was in the 80s so the argument for syn has gotten to be more religious than practical. I think only for extreme conditions or long drains does syn still have a strong advantage.

Other than door hinges and stuff, I think only my chipper shredder and aircompressor uses dino. I would change to syn in the compressor if I could find a straight 30 weight nondetergent syn.

My chipper uses dino since I am trying to get rid of the final 4 qts or so of dino I inherited. So I use the dino there and change it at the end of each season just to get rid of it.

Not a choice but I vote for the regular Motorcraft 5w-20 sythetic blend. Works just fine for me, and half the cost of full synthetic.

I'd have to agree with Jim here, "Dino" engine oil for the most part is so much better than it was even 10 years ago it really can be more religion than practicality. I run syn for long drain intervals on a small gas motor, but "dino" Delo 400 for the diesel and do oil analysis to help maximize drain intervals on the diesel. But for my gearbox, Synthetic only, it seems syn gear oils still hold quite an advantage over dino lube oils.

I used M-1 in an 87' T-Bird in which I put 297K on. After being in the Navy Air Force for 20 years and seeing 'dem jets use it, I wouldn't use anything else BUT synthetic !
