Get rid of that thing. It's only in there satisfy some EPA requirements. It blocks from 25-30% of the airflow in the intake. I took mine out before it got really cold (single digits and teens) this last winter, and noticed no ill effects related to the cold.
It's not necessary for operation of your engine at all. I took mine out almost 2 years ago, but I have seen absolutely no benefit as far as mileage or performance having taken mine out. But my pickup does produce a LOT of white smoke at cold startup without it. I started it in a hotel parking lot at Sun Valley one Sunday morning this winter when the temperature was -3*, dead calm. In probably less than 3 minutes of idleing I literally filled the entire parking lot with eye burning white smoke. People were looking at me like I just kicked their dog. I couldn't wait to get out of there.
i removed mine and have done many hours of idling on cold days... no white smoke at all... i think it's just another useless piece of junk that the EPA forced FORD to put on all the 7.3's... someone told me that these motors don't come from the factory with these... only the motors that are going into FORDS got them... i don't know if that is true or not but i would not be surprised if it is...
I might be wrong, but I don't think it would start unplugged at -3* without a good GPR. It was replaced in February.
I would challange anyone to pull on a dyno and demonstrate any benefit from removing the AIH. Not trying to start a big argument here, I just don't think there is any benefit from this mod unless you are using the port for boost access.
On edit: I ohmed the glow plugs and replaced the GPR in December, not February.
I noticed some gauges use the AIH hole to get a boost reading. What are yalls opinion on that? Is it better than other methods? Would it be a good use for the AIH hole, or is just plugging it better?

That is a great place for a boost reading. I have an early 99 or I would use that location.
