Does the 73-79 have the same axle codes as the 67-72 or are they all different. I am hoping to find a 4.11 limited slip or if not with the slip just the 4.11. I have a 3.50 right now. Want something with more of a jump to it. Also if they are different can someone point me in the right direction to get them.
Thanks
Keith
John thanks for the info but I did know that part. The thing I am looking for is the axle codes in the door so that I can find the 4.11 that I am looking for. Like the number 08 in mine represents a 3.50 gear. I am wanting to use the door tag to find the right axle that I want.
Thanks
Keith
i have a coupple more to add to mil1ion's https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...105385&width=0 also if you find a 3rd member that is 31 spline and you have 28 spline you can swap side gears but you cant swap 31 spline side gears into a 28 spline carrier the ends of the 28 axles are smaller than the 31's.
My axle being original 67 should be 28 spline. Are you saying if I find one with the 31 spline and I get third member and both axles they wont fit in my housing cause its too small? or am I misunderstanding you.
Thanks
Keith
you can put the 28 spline side gears that you most likely have now in a 31 spline carrier becuase the holes in the side of a 31 spline carrier are bigger than the holes in a 28 spline carrier so the axles will not have a problem fitting. but 31 spline axles will not fit in a 28 spline carrier.

Keith Keep in mind that doors are replaced all of the time, and not the tags. Rears can be changed out and not the tags. Depending on the door tag is a guideline at best. You might want to do further checking before ordering parts.
Thanks John I didn't even think about that. What would be a easy way to look than that when searching the junk yard. Don't the tag on the axle say exactly what it has if tag is not missing? I also know you can jack the truck up and turn the tire and count rotations but don't remember the counts on that way of looking. Also would be difficult jacking every truck up you come to.
Keith
if the tag is there, on the bottom row the first numbers will be 4 11 for 4.11 open or 4L11 for 4.11 limited slip. also if there is no tag then you can jack one side up mark the tire and drive shaft, spin the tire 2 times and count how many times the drive shaft turns. if it turns just a little over 4 time then that is 4.11. if you jack up one tire and cant spin it either the brakes are sticking or it is limited slip. if you get both wheels up and they spin the same direction then spin the wheel one full turn and count how many times the drive shaft turns again a little over 4 is 4.11. make sure the tranny is in neutral and the front end is chocked.
Keith, I think it would be safe to presume that if the tag is still attached to the rear it would be correct.
When you go to jacking up the rear wheels you got one way for open and one for ls.
I think it is better to find a level place and roll the truck one complete tire revolution and count the driveshaft turns. Some recommend taping a string to the ds to help with the count.
If you do this, be sure to have a bud close by in case something goes wrong and you need help. I have done it on a garage floor rolling it towards the wall by myself.
