Any help or any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I just acquired this vehicle . after sitting for 5 years not being started of moved for the most part, i trailered her home. changed all the fluids. charged the battery. one turn of the key .. starts up.. runs better every time i drive it. well , there are some minor leaks. mostly around the intake manifold. coolant in the front and oil in the back. so i figured buy a new intake ..and put a 4 bbl on it . so i bouat all the above and got the proper seal kits . no more leaks . except in the back seal . leaks a small ammount of oil . silicone took care of that .or if someone knows of a better gasket kit other than felpro . please let me know.
also . i set the valves according to the haynes manual. runs great ..but after a while of running .. the nuts on the rockers gets loose. and i knocks bad.. after readjusting . this hapens again .. and again.. any suggestions .. maybe talking it to a "real mechanic"
They should be the positive-stop type, you just run the nut down until it stops and torque it. Adjustments are made by using longer or shorter pushrods.
WELL. ON THE ADVICE OF A MOTORHEAD FRIEND.(HE ACTUALY KNOWS HIS STUFF) . FROM THE HAYNES MANUAL .. I MAKE THE MARKS ON THE PULLEY ON THE CRANK.......POSITION 1 POINTS TO CYL1 BEING TDC THEN 2 IS ACROSS FROM THIS AND IN THE MIDDLE OF THAT STRAIGHT UP WOULD BE POS 3
U CAN THEN ADJ CYL3 INTAKE AND EXHAUST AND CYL6 INTAKE.. ( DONT HAEV THE MANUAL IN FRONT OF ME) AND SO ON .. THEN MOVE TO POSITION 2 AND SO ON..
I DID NOT TORQUE THEM TO ANY SPECIFIC SETTING ... ? OOPS.. WELL . ANY IDEAS .. CAUSE I HAVE READ SEVERAL TIMES IN THAT SECTION .. AND DID NOT SEE A TORQUE SECTION .. ANY IDEAS ON WHAT IT WOULD BE .. ?
You shouldn't have to do any of that stuff. Just run all the nuts down on the studs until they bottom out. I forget what the torque setting is. It's not that much, just enough so the nut doesn't start backing off. I just go by feel, tighten it down until it stops and then just a little nudge more.
Hey no problem! Well, since you're going to use a torque wrench, I looked up the spec. when I got home and it's 17 - 23 ft.lbs. Hmmm... that's a little more than a nudge. I'd go on the low side of the spec, that is, if you haven't done them already.
Brant, next time you post, hit the Caps Lock key to unlock. It's hard for me to read all those CAPITAL LETTERS.
Sorry about that . bad habbit..Well mostly all is well. have a small leak in the rearend.. and in the passanger side shaft output for the 4x4. but i still blow the dipstick out.. and i do think that it might be leaking oil from there, that makes it seem like its leaking everywhere. its fine until i need to spank a chevy. waiting to shif after the tach reaches 4grand.. well ..lets say the people behind me dont like all the oil i get on their car... do they make dipsticks that screw in . should i get the jb weld out . or jsut find a way to get rid of the dipstick all together. ? or.. maybe fix it right , if i can find out what right is?
The dipstick is being blown out because of pressure in the crankcase needing to get out. Check your p.c.v. (positive crankcase ventilation) system, I'll bet it's clogged. Clearing that up should fix that problem.
