Lots of controversy here. Anybody ever done this on their Ford truck? There are a few Chevy guys turning good times with rear mounted turbos. What do you guys think?
Remote turbos work well. Not as well as a turbo located as nearer the engine, but they work well nonetheless. A properly designed remote system can still yield more performance than a supercharger. The only real dissadvantage to the remote turbo is slightly more lag. STS has remote turbo kits that offer impressive gains in performance. Check 'em out, even if you plan to build your own system, for reference.
I would think that these would be a little easier to fabricate by yourself because you can use true headers and the way I would do it would be to put the turbo right after the Y-Pipe, as the heat from the exhaust will still be pretty high and the velocity of the exhaust will be very high. It will also allow less engine bay modifications if the room for a turbo is lacking. I would still want to try one of these on a vehicle because I can see how they would work.
Right on, G lube. Definately would be easier to fabricate. Exhaust gas temperatures and velocities remain high if the proper materials are used in the exhaust system. Ceramic coated headers with resonably sized stainless pipe would lose very little exhaust gas velocity. The only issue to be aware of with a remote system is the oil return. A scavanging pump is required at the turbo to return the lubricating oil to the engine crankcase. A reservior may be required depending on the type of pump used. This, however, is no different than what is required for a low mounted turbo(s) in the engine compartment. The remote system also offers slight intake charge cooling due to pipe length.
I built my own system as you are describing with the turbo under the truck, I've got it on a 79 f-350 supercab with a 528, with the stroker I don't notice the lag until the turbo spools up, i'm using a turbo off of an n-14 cummins
