problem: Bronco. 351w. when my motor warms up (around mid guage) my oil pressure drops to 0 when around 800 rpm. as soon as i give it some gas..it rises again...and so on...need help!!
I am assuming that you are watching the factory oil gauge, which may or may not be telling you the truth.Install a mechanical oil gauge(permanent or temperary) to get a true reading of your oil pressure.
What 460 said. Those oil guages are not all that accurate, and have been known to fail alot. Also check to make sure the sending unit is working ok. So long as you don't hear clacking, rattling or bad engine knock, then it it probably the guage or the sending unit.
It actually doesn't take much pressure to lubricate the engine. About 10psi is more than enough. These engines put out between roughly 40psi and 50psi when new, and the pressure gradually drops as the engine wears out. By the time you get down to 10psi, you are close to needing a new engine. The pressure is supposed to increase by 10psi for every 1000 rpms.
my modified that was in my 80 had low pressure a mustang rebuilder said they were notorius for such behavior and the modified is only a stacked windsor so maybe there's a thought to look into
The factory oil gauges are not that accurate, but they will tell the truth when pressure is gone. The shaft between the distributor and oil pump on my rig snapped a while back and the gauge just dropped. I figured it was just a bad factory one as well, sure enough my engine started clanking. So if the guage worked before just fine, chances are your oil pressure has dropped.
