How do I know if it is my sensor in the rear or the actual guage? I pulled my posi-unit out and checked out the ring, and it seemed fine. I pulled out the sensor and cleaned it and it looked fine. How much is supposed to stick into the rear end? Mine just has like a 1/16 of an inch, maybe. It seemed right. I need to know how to check the cluster or figure out where I need to spend the money to fix the speedometer. I've searched too and couldn't really find anthing. Any help would be appreciated.
The sensor in the rear end is so simple it almost can't fail. It has no moving parts, it's just a magnet that sends a signal back to the computer when metal (the teeth on the gear) passes under it.
If your ABS light hasn't come on, then I would definitely assume it's the speedo head itself. The only other part in the system is the wiring to the sensor. But if the ABS is fine, it has to be the head.
Asuming your working on your '93 this may be a little diffrent, but on my '87 the conection to the speedometer is an actuall physical spinning linkage. In order to check your speedometer the shop manual sugests pulling the dash out first. Then driving the truck to see if the speedo cable is moving. If it is then it's your instrument cluster.
You can also disconect the cable from your transfer case and spin it by hand to see if the instrument cluster moves.
The sensor in the rear diffrential is for the RABS. And in the 87 at least has no bearing on the spedometer.
I may be way off and your truck may be diffrent. But I would start there.

His truck is way different from yours. 91 and older F-series use a mechanical driven speedo like yours. 92 and newer use the VSS to control the electronic speedometer.
Yeah, the way those speed sensors fail is usually moisture or whatever ruining the thing. It's not mechanical at all, as andym said. I had mine go out, couldn't figure out why. The guy at the dealership told me to put some silicon up there and seal something or other off... can't remember exactly. Unless you're transmisison is bucking severely, I doubt this is the problem
Post revisited: I had to park the truck for a while and now I'm trouble shooting now. By speedometer head, do you mean the gauge in the cluster?? If so, I guess a junkyard would be the best place to look?
