I have an opportunity to pick up a '69 F250 4x4 in parts, but missing the front axle (among other things). I would like to take my '71 2wd and piece together a nice 4x4 on the '69 running gear. First question: What other years besides the '67-72 front 4x4 axles will work?
Second question: How readily available are these axles realistically and how much should I expect to pay?
Thanks
Well right now I am tryin to find a Dana 60 out of a 79 F350 4x4 with disc brakes for my 72 of the same description, but expect to fork out about $1500+
$1500-ouch! Ok, plan B. I have a '73 IH 3/4 4x4 I have been thinking of parting out. It has a Dana 44 front axles with the offset diff. on the passenger side. Is the F250 4x4 also offset on the passenger side? Would this be swappable? What do I need to check to confirm if it is compatible?
Thanks, you guys are always very helpful!
You could find a disc brake Dana 44 from a late 70's F250 for about half of that. That truck originally came with a dana 44 so you would have about the same strength but with disc brakes. As for swaping out the front axle from the 73 cornbinder, the pumpkin is on the drivers side of those years F250 so it may not be the best solution.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Sep-02 AT 00:40 AM (EST)]Thanks Jerry. Just the info. I need. I think I'll make some calls to the local bone yards tomorrow. So what range of years will fit?
not sure where your located, but I can pick up dana 44's with either drums or discs for $100 all day at a local u pullit. They always
have 73-79 4x4's, I swapped in a 76 heavy duty dana 44 into my 69 f-250 crewcab. It was a direct swap and now i have disc brakes too.
Let me know if i can help
Joe is right, you can find some pretty good deals on those Dana 44s. You can use F250 dana 44s all the way up to 1979. 77.5 was offically the end of the high boy so the axle will be a little different in the 77.5 to 79's but the spring perch withds are the same. I swapped in a 79 Dana 60 into to my 67 crewcab and and the spring pads widths were the same.
