Hi, new to the site ... and thought I would start with a simple question.
I just bought an 03 FX4, how fast can I drive the truck in 4wd high? This question stems from wether or not I should drive the truck in 4wd high during the rain.
Thank you for the respones. A couple of questions though ...
Some people are telling me never ever drive the truck in 4wd while on pavement. Why not? It is raining heavy, you see the puddles on the road, isnt that one of the uses for 4wd?
Secondly, what is meant by JOIN CLUB FTE -SUPPORT THE FORUMS!?
Puddles are usually taken care of with decent tread. 4x4 is not needed for puddles of water, unless it is slick rock underneath while off roading. Using 4x4 on dry pavement will cause nasty tire wear as well as added stress to the front end drive train. Try making a sharp turn in 4x4 on dry pavement and you will feel bump steer. This is beacuse the front tires are turning at the same speed, but in a turn, the inside tire needs to go slower than the outside tire. If you are worried about puddles, then either slow down or change lanes, (assuming you are on the interstate at higher speed). Going 100MPH is in no way good for the front drive train regardless on what people have done in the past unless you drive a desert racer. I would hate to see the damage being done to the vehicle and hate even worse the $$ to fix it. How long do you want your truck to last without problems showing up? Pretty much up to you. Factory I believe state no more than either 40 or 45mph. I tend to stick to that thought since they did spend alot of money researching what holds up against what. Also you lose mileage in 4x4.
The manual for my 97 says not to drive faster than 55mph when in 4hi. I never use my 4w when on the highway, I only use it on side streets during the winter.
I'm with ya there SKILIFE17. I only use mine when I can't go no further in 2wd or when it is slick out and I want better starts from the lights when it is snowing or ice packed roads.

Same here!
A lot of people think that 4WD on trucks is the same as their Volvo or Subaru with AWD. The two are very different, and thats where people learn the hard way when things start to break.
I only use my 4x4 when Im stuck, or can't go any farther in 2WD.
I only use my 4x4 when it is realy snowy out or get stuck. The guy I mentioned before that drives 100 miles an hour in 4 wheel drive claims that it doesnt do anything wrong to it, but shop repair bills prove him wrong really fast.
