i have a 03 expedition 4WD with warped front rotors. i am going to have them turned in the morning. my question is how difficult are they to remove?. are the rotors pressed on or can i just remove the caliper and pull the rotor off?. also what is the correct torque for the lugnuts?. thanks in advance....clay
The rotors can be a real bear on these vehicles. I came across this forum when I couldn't break the rotors free on my 2001. It required a sledgehammer and full swings to break them off. They were useless when I finally got them off. too much damage. The wheel and lug nuts should be the only things holding the rotor on. Remove the caliper and they should slip off. However, if they're like mine it's difficult to say the least. Once removed, have them turned and put them back on with a coating of anti-sieze lubricant where it comes in contact with the hub. Hopefully this will prevent this problem of removal in the future.
Warped rotors means they were overheated, which almost always means they are too thin and couldn't disappate the heat quick enough. And if they are thick enough to be turned, they'll be that much thinner after turning and if you warped 'em once, I'll bet you'll warp 'em again. Just buy new.
do a search on this forum for "rotor and remove" and you will come up with a few really good tips on getting them off without (hopefullly) having to beat them off. Also, when you put them back on, use some anti-seize to make it easier next time.
Dont forget, BEFORE coating the mating surfaces with no-sieze clean ALL old scale and rust. It is this scale that leads to the perceptiion of warped rotors in many cases.
thanks for all the replys. one side pulled right off and the other side needed to be persuaded with a hammer. it really was not all that difficult. i agree about turning rotors, i do not like to do it. i bought the vehicle used and they had just put new tires on it. when i rotated the tires the lug nuts were on so tight that the air gun would not budge ANY lug nut. this is what warped the rotors. i have driven nothing but fords for the last 15 years and have learned proper torque solves all warped rotor problems......
