I am having problems with my air conditioner, on normal a/c everything workes good. When i switch to max a/c nothing changes, in fact i think it doesn't work as good. shouldn't the fan kick up to a higher speed?
I should tell you this is a 1993 with a 4.0 engine
THANKS IN ADVANCE OLDMANBERGIE
The fan should not kick up to a higher speed in fact the only thing it does on MAX A/C is recirculate the already cool air in the van rather then draw the warmer air from the outside which in affect makes it cooler inside.
One thing you can easily check from under the hood is the vacuum motor which closes a door which prevents the outdoor air from coming in. Its a round gold can with a plastic arm and a vacuum hose leading to it its to the right of the blower on my 3.0. To see if its operating have someone in the van start it up with the A/C off then tell them to turn on MAX A/C you should see the vacuum motor arm move if not then you may have a problem with either a leaking vacuum line or a bad motor.
If the vent door isn't closing I would test the other functions like the defrost, floor air, and mix settings they are controlled by another vacuum motor. If they are operating properly then your problem is either the hose or the MAX/AC vacuum motor. If the other functions don't work as well then a vacuum hose could have come loose.

l When the system is set for MAX A/C, the outside/recirculating air door is set to seal off outside air and allows recirculated air from the passenger compartment through the system. This exposes the passenger compartment to the normal operating noise from the blower motor. This increase in noise level might be confused with an increase in speed when, in fact, speed responds only to the heater blower motor switch (18578) in the A/C control.
this setting not recommended when passengers have ate beans or boiled eggs...please open all windows
You need to get the hot air out before useing Max AC, this gives you the best efficiency. I recommend rolling down the windows, and setting the AC to normal ac till the hot air is gone, then close the windows, and switch to max ac as the air cools down.
I would agree with krankshaft regarding a bad vacuum motor or line. The upright position of the vacuum motor traps road grit in the rubber diaphram folds, eventually wearing a hole. Replacement is a fairly simple affair.
