7 qts?

my 89 302 takes 7 qts to be full on the dipstick...shouldnt it be 6?
i can only think that somewhere down the line someone put in the wrong dipstick or it shrunk?

My stock 77 302 takes 6 quarts of oil. I know that if someone opted for a high volume oil pump they would also have installed a larger oil pan. Switched dip stick could also be possible, but I am not buying the shrinkage theory.

this is a regular work van and should be stock...the only logical thing i can think of is the dipstick unless there is something i dont know about engines that would allow it to take another qt...maybe oiling system (filter, etc) problem?

Just a guess, but you can buy a 2 quart oil filter?

Well does anyone have a measurment for the dipstick for the man? That should clear that up and if so then you would feel safe with the added quart. Do you ahve a preasure gauge for you oil? That would be the main concern right? Oil preassure getting to high?

Extra oil in the pan won't raise the oil pressure, it'll just get whipped up by the crank (if the level is actually high enough so that the crank is in it.)

Usually an extra qt. isn't enough to raise it that high, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I'd be interested in knowing what the part number off the dipstick is, that should at least tell us if it's the right year or not.

Earlier Ford vans had a higher capacity then a lot of others, I don't know if that carried through to '89 or not...

well i did another oil change yesterday and the part# on the stick was E7UE-6750-CA...from the tip of the stick to the sealing lip by the handle it was 39.5" and another eigth from the tip to the metal part of the handle...the stick had a slight bend and the oil pan has bends around the drain plug but looks they appear to be normal

Well, that tells me if you have a 1987 or newer van, you have the correct dipstick.

It should take six quarts, dipsticks are not that accurate.

Run the van and make sure it is hot, immediately drain the oil and remove the filter, and let drain for a few minutes. Do the filter and oil change with six quarts of oil. Start and run for a minute. Then let it sit for ten minutes and then check the oil level. Mark the six quart level.

its an 89 302 (almost 100k mi) and i was always wondering about the accuracy of that dipstick...thats probably why they r called "dipsticks"...i never really cared because i only change the oil twice a year and i always though a qt was supposed to get trapped in the oil valley or something and it was just leaking by and should have always done 6...i didnt get an exact 6qts in because i wanted to try some lucas oil stabilizer and probably added a little more or less and its pretty much around the add mark for 6qts

doesnt sound like adding an extra qt hurt anything...i know the crank could cause foaming but it runs fine and if it makes it another couple months that will be enough and it will be retired from the fleet and i will probably have to make it my daily driver until i kill it
