This happened to me today and I just got plain lucky.
While changing the plugs and wires on my truck today I was leaning over the front of the truck and I had my remote starter in my pocket of my jeans. While working on the trunk I must have pressed the start button on the remote. Just as I was leaning back to grab a spark plug or something the truck started. Let me tell you I feel really dumb posting this but if it helps save a finger, arm or something else it's worth the embarrassment.
As they said on Hill Street Blues (for those who remember that program) "Be careful out there"
That's why every starter I've installed came with a hood switch so it won't start with the hood opened. You may want to install one.
(or pull the fuse when you work on it)
If you have a pin switch already check to see if it is working properly. Nine times out of ten when a customer says thier remote start is not working properly, it's either something to do with the hood pin switch or the valet switch is accidentally set in the off position. The most common problem being the pin switch has rusted out and is not making contact or stuck in the down position because of the rust. Sand off the rust or replace with a new one but spray some lithium grease on it once in a while on top and under where the wire is connected to it. That is the only maintanance I tell customers to do with the remote starts. But the most important instruction I always tell a customer is to put the remote start in valet mode every time the vehicle is being serviced, this means every oil change and tune-up because you never know if you might accidentally press the remote while a mechanic or yourself is working on the vehicle. The hood pin switch is only a mechanical backup it can break or rust out or just fail, that's why you should get into the habit of using the valet feature and test it when you set it and it should not start.
