O.K. I am asking for help from some of the troopers who have forged the path of rebuilding these oldie but goodie Ford F100's. I HAVE A 68 Short wheel base with step side bed, we have changed out the tired 240ci six and swapped in an 80 model 302ci with c-6 tranny. My son the hot rodder has installed Blackjack headers by Dynomax and here is the problem. The headers ride on the front crossmember and cause the engine to tilt to the right , My question is are there longer or taller engine mounts and tranny mounts available to eliminate this and allow the engine to sit normally. I know that the headers are a pain but the starter is easily removed and I have found that if you use the header wraps like those used on the dirt track cars you can eliminate the heat problems. This engins has some modification work new cam, some head work and intake and carb change, truck ran well the stock manifolds but did not breath as well as possible. Any help will be appreciated.
P.S. the next step for the engine compartment of this truck will probably be a small Stroker motor, since the son is 21 and still full of the gotta go faster stuff........
I have never heard of using taller engine mounts, they would probably cause other problems. I would suggest having the headers modified to fit, probably too late to get the right ones for a truck.
The headers in question are actually made for 69 F100 with 302ci, I am wondering if the front crossmember on these trucks are different, also if the fact that this truck was originally a six cylinder that has something to do with it???????
When I first put Flowtech headers in my '72 302 the passenger side collector touched the crossmember. Yours must be more than just touching though if they are holding the engine up on that side.
Anyway I managed to bend them up a little with the floor jack and a block of wood and then I put 1/8" spacers under the motor mounts so now I have about 1/4" clearance.
Also I learned the hard way that if you jack the engine up be sure to inbolt the fan shroud and hang if on the front of the engine or else you will break it when the fan if forced up against it.
