Since the warmer weather has started here in new england the bugs have been out big time. i do alot of driving and my truck gets plastered with bugs(some of those suckers are huge). i was wondering if the bug deflectors work for keeping some of the bugs off of the windshield. and if they do work are there any drawbacks to having one" wind noise ect)

Any recomendations on a good lower profile bug deflector would also be helpful if they work.

Do they deflect bugs-well not really. Maybe they cause some on the fringes to miss but you could never prove it by my windshield.

What they do for you is stop the rock chips that the leading edge of the hood collects.

The also add to the looks of the truck for very little money and almost no work.

There should be no drawback to having one on the truck as long as you buy a quality product. Most are simple bolt on with no drilling required and will last for the life of the truck with minimal care.

On my '77 I had the Bug Shield that stuck stright up at a 0 or 360º angle (choice of numbers). It kept bugs off approx the lower 2/3 of my windshield. On my '93 I had on of those Bug Shields that curves over the hood nose. It kept some of the bugs off my windshield, but not a pleasing amount. Same with my '04. Curved Bug Shield. Keeps some bugs off.

 

id say its worth it it does keep some bugs off get the one from ford

 

Bug deflectors work if a bug gets in the way of the deflector while going down the road. They also deflect rocks. Good Luck!

 

so the deflector doesnt differ the air flow like a spoiler and carry the bugs up and over the windshield?

 

Bugs are a fact of life. Clean the windshield more often during the insect mating season. Protect the paint with PPF from rocks and bug acid stains. Keep the clean profile of your truck. After all, you didn't buy your truck because you thought it would look nice with a bug deflector attached to the front end.

 

i was only going to buy a bug deflector if it worked well, but from what i am hearing they do not work that well. i guess that i will just have to keep a windex bottle and some paper towels in my truck to keep the windshield clean.

 

My experience with the deflectors is no they dont really do anything to keep bugs off the windshield. They may deflect some small ones but they dont deflect big ones.

As noted earleir they do make the front look better, they do not aid in deflecting rocks.

One drawback is that they do decrease slightly your gas milage, and make it harder to use the onboard windshield washer as the windflow causes it to spray all over.

Now with this said I have one on all my trucks, cosmetics mainly.

 

The biggest reason I put them on my trucks is to prevent rock chips on the front edge of my hood.

Take a look at the leading edges of vehicles without bug deflectors. Bugs, rocks, dirt, and even wind resistance will cause the paint on these surfaces to deteriorate over time. A bug deflector is a small investment compared to repainting a hood. I think they look cool as well.

 

I am taking mine off today. I like the clean look of NO BUG DEFLECTOR. I have the Ford deflector and if anyone wants it, they can have it for a small price. $40 including shipping will do for me. first one to PM me gets it. Happy Easter

 

Two thumbs up for the bug deflectors.

 

Curved bug deflectors don't work as well as straight bug deflectors. The straight bug deflectors prevent your wiper fluid from hitting the windshield at higher speeds (anything above 25 mph).

Figure the curved deflectors will protect only the surfaces they are contacting and nothing else. Whether this is worth their cost is up to you.

My older Fords don't look too bad with the straight deflector. A bra would do a better job of chip protection if you don't like the looks of a straight deflector on a newer Ford.
