help with code 171 and 174

I am getting codes 171 and 174. I don't see any vacuum leaks anywhere. It seems to run ok, except at idle, sometimes it kills and other times it revs high. Does anybody have any suggestions where to start?

Thanks

Welcome to FTE!

Year, Engine, Mileage?

Those lean codes are seen quite a lot, so there are a number of threads on them. I solved mine on my 98 4.0L V6 with new upper intake gaskets (where I couldn't detect a leak), but there are several things to look at such as fuel pressure issues or a dirty MAF that can be the culprit. 97's also have a known issue with the fuel rail gasket.

Some other threads for your perusal:

type of truck/engine with problem

It is a 1997 Mazda B4000 with 102000 miles on it. It has the 4.0 liter Ford engine in it. I recently replaced the MAF sensor, so I think the problem is something else.

Due to the fact that it is a 97, you should definitely investigate the fuel supply manifold gasket. In his third post in this thread:

<a href="https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-232373-Coolant%20Loss%20-%204.0L%20OHV%20Lower%20Intake%20Gasket">Coolant Loss - 4.0L OHV Lower Intake Gasket</a>

Rockledge summed it up:
Also, I elected not to detach the Fuel Supply Manifold from the Lower Intake Manifold. I pulled the whole assembly together, fuel injectors and all. I figured that I was not getting any lean codes, which is what a bad Fuel Supply Manifold Gasket would cause. However, if you have a 1997 4.0L, I would probably not advise this. For some reason, for that year only, the gasket located between the Fuel Supply Manifold and Lower Intake Manifold can lose its compressive loading and get drawn into the intake manifold runners, resulting in a vacuum leak/lean condition and associated codes. A new, redesigned gasket has been used ever since (TSB 98-6-8). So if you are doing this kind of repair, replacement of the Fuel Supply Manifold would be adviseable on the 1997 models.
You could have other a different issue, but this is something to keep in mind and check out the TSB for.
