Ok I have been searching the whole shackle flip thing and I still have a few unanswered questions. First off I am gonna try and figure out how to get some front spring hangars to mount in the rear for my "shackle flip". It was a bit tricky getting those rivets out with a small angle grinder, punch, chisel, and hammer but they finally came out. Next how do I get the angle correct? I was thinking with spring mounted at full droop is there a certain degree i should be at? Next I want to beef up my shackles. I saw Ivan's and was impressed, but what about getting some 1/4 or 3/8 plate and cutting it to the open "c" part of the shackle and boxing it in like youd do a frame? They arent heat treated are they?! Thanks for the help guys, I appreaciate it.
I did a cupple of tack welds from the mount I made to the frame, then set it down on it's weight. It took a few tries before I got it to 15 deg, figuring the new springs would settle some. It's at 20 deg. now and it rides fine there. I made the shackels the stock length out of 1/4" plate and used energy suspension bushings. The front mount is stock, dropped 3 1/2".
I am just afraid of the shackle buckling. I make trips to the dunes so weve got two motorcycles in the back, 100 pounds worth of tools and other stuff. 15-20 gallons of fuel in the back, gear, food, and other stuff like that. Along with that sometimes I will tow a trailer out to the hardpack sand or something if people cant get it out. I think I will just make Ivans shackles, so I just need to take the OD of a leaf spring bushing and that match that to the id of a piece of tubing.
Would this work as long as I got some angle iron that reach the lower two holes? I just flipped it and used the bottom two holes for the top holes (when flipped) if that makes sense. It looks pretty weak like that( i will box in or custom make some shackles) but that hangar looks too wimpy when flipped.
