Tire size on stock rim

After reading many of the posts on tire sizing, I'm still not sure what will work. Will 305/70-17 safely work on stock 17in. aluminum rims that came on the 1997 F150's with the offroad package? Or are 285's the biggest you should go? And as for clearance issues, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with those 2in. lift kits that you change the torsion bar adjusting cams and steel blocks for the back? Will it need alignment after?

I am running 315/70/17's on my stock FX4 wheels. Personally, I don't think swapping out the torsion keys is a good idea. It puts the shafts too far out of angle with the risk of popping the cv's out of place.

Did you have to lift anything or just crank the front end up a little?
