question guys! whats the pro's and con's of 16.5" rims? i see alot of sets on Craigslist for a smoke-in deal but not may rims for sale in 16" 17" 18" etc.
ill be due for tires soon and im not a huge fan of the stock steal rims with chrome covers, so to be wise, this is the time to figure out a new rim look and still be flexible on size as i have yet to get tires. im stuck in a debate between 33's or 35's and wish i could bear to lift the truck 6" to run the 37" millatary mud surplus tires lol. but thats my own debate and im not askin on here as i know tire size is a beaten to death subject.
cuz they suck! they have the worst tire bead ever made, anything lower than street pressure blows the beads off road. plus tiresin that size are obsolte
Some guys down in Offroad have run these, some on DD trucks on the street, and said traction on wet pavement was about like ice skating. Bias ply 36s or radial 37s, neither one has manners on pavement, they were put on HMMVs for a reason
if your set on 16.5" rims weld a 1/8 rod about 1/2" from the inside bead around the rim and grind the welds into a ramp for the inner bead to help go over it
Otherwise invest in Humvee rims. they are a double bead lock and street legal
well the only reason i like the 37's was cost lol.... other than that eh. and far as the rims i just see alot of 16.5's on craigslist for dirt cheep and semi plentiful, but anything in 16 17 other than stock rims are far and few between... just currious was all! i ask people from time to time and get mixed reviews so i ask some more and then make my choice lol... best ya can do sometimes.
16.5's are great if you are in the middle of nowhere with a set of dis mounted tires and just you! But we have these things called tire shops now, so the need for a user mountable tire has gone the way of the Oldsmobile! Just walk away they are cheap for a reason!

There is nothing wrong with 16.5" wheels. As long as you run the correct air pressure in the tires, you will have no issues. Don't listen to the naysayers. There are 10 people running 16.5" wheels with no problems for every 1 person that says they are unsafe.

You've obviously never had one spontaneously dis mount at 65 MPH no fun at all! You won't be able to get any more new rubber for them as the size is being discontinued by most manufacturers, there is a reason for this! If you never have a low tire or a slow leak, than great there safe if you get a low tire or a slow leak there not! I'm not that big a gambler as I sometimes get a low tire!

I ran 16.5" wheels on my old lifted 2000 with no issues (and even aired down a bit to get through the dunes). I had PJ's, Swampers, BFG M/T's on 'em, never had issues (this was when I was back in AZ). I only upgraded to 17" wheels because Toyo didn't offer the size I wanted in a 16.5" wheel.
They can be prone to bead issues, but the worst of it is the tire availability SUCKS.
