I haul a 8000lb toy hauler often (twice monthly)
I will need a rebuild or crate within 2 yrs and will be looking into options soon
Any help will be welcome

Well I am not too sure what a dreaded 99 V10 is but yes it is the early version so only in the 275-295 HP renge.... still a very well designed and built motor...especially if you have 122,000 on the clock and you don't lead in with a list of problems and faults.

What make you suspect only 2 years life left?

Keep proper services, replace plugs and rubber plug boots every 50-60 thou and that motor is just as likely to give you another 100,000 trouble free miles.

I read somewhere in this forum ,average motor life to be aprox. 166000 mi
It could last for another 100000 mi , but I need it to be reliable.
At present the rate I put mileage on it it will likely reach 200000 mi within 2 1/2 to 3 yrs
If ford going to discontinue the V10 I would like to have my ducks in a row well in advance

None of us has any earthly Idea what Ford is going to do with the future of the v10

You of course will only be concerned with rebuild-ability of the older 99 MY version so a whole lot of the 2001-2004 and all 2005-2007 top end parts are not good for you.

Keep you eye in e-bay for pulled 99 motors from a abandoned or wrecked truck or van.

Consider what your truck is worth in trade and search for a low mileage 01-05 truck

I used to put lots of miles a year on but 100K in 2 /2.5 years is serious driving time!

Find one of the very few (but they exist) private rebuild shops and get an estimate on a full top end refurb with and with out lower end bearings. Get a list of required parts and start now buying as you find them.

If you intend 200+ thousand mile life out of the truck then a plan for the future is wise and manageable. I have not looked in a while but I keep hearing long block prices in the 7 to 10$$$ thou dollar range.... I would buy a new/used truck before I went that route..but that is me, I like the smell of a new vehicle ever couple of years now that I can afford it.... 20 years ago...different story.... I have had many vehicles that lived over 300,000 miles and a few of them are still on the road.... real secret was not rebuilds but meticulous maintenance every 90 days

122000 minus 200000 = 78000
78000 divided by 2.5 = 31200
166000 being average rebuild time I have a little over a year.
I can afford another but why? So it can depreciate 25% the first day I own it?
I have seen longblock for as little as $4000 with 3yr/100000 mi warranties.
Also the newer two valve heads and manifolds dont fit? I can source the manifolds easily.

desrcr -- Where have you seen long block for that price??? Why not share that info...that is what FTE is all about.

IMO...go with a crate motor. Year: 2002-2004

you can get them right though ford and motorcraft so don't worry as fred said . as to miles one of our guys found a v10 in a wreaker with 400 k plus and running smoothly. this is probily one of the strongest blocks you can find . low end is cross bolted four bolts or meaning six bolt mains. taking all the flex out of it , the crank is forged steel. rods are are powered forged steel pistons are cast. the camshafts are chain drive whats to worry it's one strong sixed beast.
and i forget which but one of the regulars has in his gallery a disasembled v10 that shows how strong they are built, man drive the beast.

desrcr,

As long as you maintain the truck well I would think that you could easily hit 200k+ with you V10 without having major problems. My last truck was a early 99 V10 with 200k miles and still pulling and run out good and strong. The previous owner had hauled drill stem for the oil wells in OK for about 120k miles before I got the truck. I short, I don't think you should have to worry about a rebuils that early unless mine was just an oddity and everyone elses just goes to crap after 166k.

I got 241k out of mine.

Plugs / fuel system maintenence, once!

Fuel Pump, once!

Oil changes, every 4000 to 8000 miles.

I never, ever touched the transmission!

In other words, I'm a crappy truck owner.

This engine is as good as they come, and I see no reason to try to fix what ain't broke.

Also, I got $7000 in trade for it. 2001 F250 super cab short bed XLT 2wd. I traded it for a 2003 Excursion V10, and did not think twice about the 75k on the clock.

That warranty does not apply to the Crate engines. The (36-month/36,000-mile) warranty applies...and will be honored by Factory Authorized Ford Dealerships. What I had previously posted...was a copy/paste from the Rhino Engine website.

The 3yr/100000 mile warranty is for a remanufactured engine only.

Appreciate the Rhino site!

Rhino is a great company to buy from. They also back their stuff well but the last couple years i have been using S&S instead as they do super nice work ,fast and for less money and give you a longer warranty 7years instead of the 3 rhino gives you. But S&S only gives you 70k warranty and rhino has a 100k. I have never bought a v-10 form S&S but i have bought plenty of 5.4 engines going on at least 15 and they are all still performing fine.

any one use jasper? they did my 3.0 marine engine due to gm's blasted piston knock problem, broke a piston 2 months out of warrrenty and 40 hours on the meter. mercruiser goes your on your own . no noise or problems runs better then when new.plus it did not cost 3.3k that mercruiser wanted for a new 4 cylinder long block
