my friend is going adjust it for me because he's done it hundreds of time before and has all the tools and speical instruments. he's also going to check out the rest of the engine for me tomarrow. ill post and up-date tomarrow evening to tell ya guys what he finds.
ok, today was interesting. first my friend adjusted my carb, then made sure that everyting else wasa in order, but the truck still wouldn't idle smooth. we checked all the wires and plugs, nothing was wrong with either. then we checked each cylinder by put one plug wire at a time to see if it made a difference, it was #7. we were then going to do a compression test but he didn't have the right plug size for his tester. so i then took the truck over to the guy that rebuilt the engine and his guys did a compression test, it was lower than nomal. so they started tinkering around testing different things. and the problem was that the power brake booster was leaking and it was causing the #7 and #4 to fowl up, because my power brakes get their vaccum power off the manifold and not from the carb. i already replaced the the power brake booster and it runs alot better at idle.
OK, my political 2-cents worth... These rigs were designed in an era when gas was dirt cheap and no matter how good you make it, it's never going to be GOOD. I get 15mpg running downhill (literally--100 mile run from 5000ft to less than 3000), but otherwise I can count on 10mpg with a 360. I'm not saying gas can be 30-cents/gallon again, but just something to keep in mind when you hit the polls in November...
Speedo off mark? Brakes dragging? All my past experience I haven't found any FE that couldn't do 12mpg. I'm on my fourth. Even that one get's 12. Seems to be the magic number.
yeah thats kinda odd with my truck i have 4:11's a 390 stock carb, flowmatched intake ported polished heads, rv cam, and larger pistons and i even get 11 to 12mpg with my fourspeed
I have a 72 F100 with 360 and stock 2bbl carb. It got 10 mpg like clockwork after I rebult carb, tune-up, Pertronix, Flamethrower, etc. I started using acetone at the 3 oz/10 gal and now I get 13-14 like clockwork. I've been doing this for over a year. When I stop using acetone the mileage drops to 10-11 in 2-3 tanks. I put acetone back in and it goes back to 13-14. Driving the speed limit also helps in that. I can get that 14 down to 12 by lead-footing it.
You should still check the compression. I have a 360 engine that I was told had been rebuilt recently and was surpised when I check compression when I got it home. Two cylinders were around 45 PSI. Tear down of the engine revealed two bust compression rings. The guy apparently put new parts in the engine but did not bore the cylinders out to elliminate the ring grooves wore in the walls of the top of the cylinders. There are a lot of different ways some one can " rebuild " an engine. I will need to bore the block .050 over to elliminate the wear in the cylinder walls.
the guy that rebuilt mine actually had the main body of the block done by Wayne's. so the only stuff my friend did was put it back together. i did do a compression test on #7 and it was at 70 but we found the problem and is trying to fix it.
would a cracked exhaust manifold be a reason for bad mpg's? yesterday when i was in the engine i noticed small craks in one of the exhaust manifolds.
87 I think it could make a very slite difference. A highly tuned carb, dual exhaust, hotter fire, timing finely adjusted, all vacumme lines checked for leaks, will give you the best results.
Acetone is hat finger nail polish remover is made of. You can buy it in quart and gallon cans. It will eat right through varnish so don't spill it on your finished furniture. Anyway, about a year ago someone posted a link to an article that claimed to expose this dirty little secret that the oil companies didn't want you to know about. It explained how acetone improves the atomization of gasoline which makes for a more efficient burn and the end result is that your 20 mpg can increase to 50-60 mpg and there was a whole slew or testimonials. One guy claimed that his little Ford car went from 25 mpg to 60. So I tried it in my truck. Lo and behold my 10 mpg like clockwork increased to 12-14. Then on one tank where I did some highway driving at 55-60 mph I got 17 mpg. I was going slow on the highway because I was carrying a heavy load. I did that same trip this past weekend and only got 14 mpg but I was driving faster. Anyway, when I stop using it my mileage will drop down to 10 over 2-3 tanks and if I put some back in I get 12-14 right away. If I drive lightly I get 14. If I lead foot it I get 12. A quart of acetone is about 4 bucks but since I only use about 4 oz at a time that gets me through 8 tanks (50 cents each) so I'm maybe paying 3-4 cents a gallon more for gas.
