My 92 ranger 2.3 liter makes a funny noise while cranking and untill it reaches idle. It only lasts a couple of seconds but is getting really annoying. It sounds kinda like something is grabbing or rubbing metal on metal. Its coming from the front of the engine like a pulley or something. At first i thought it was from the idler tensionor or dummie pulley but after pulling the serpeitine belt off, i discovered that the power steering pump pulley is not like the others. I can move it in and out about 1/8 to 1/4 inch. It's also not as easy to turn as the alternator and water pump (which i don't know if its normal or not, i kinda figure that the power steering should have more resistence to it.)
What i'm asking is should the power steering pulley be able to be pushed in and out a little bit or should it be solild like the other pulleys?
that may be a problem , but i doubt that is whats making the noise. I've had the same noise out of my trucks. I pulled the starter and lubed the front starter bearing. Fixed it right up. Now it has a nice clean vroom when it starts.
