Tire wear?

I just picked up a used 77 F150 and I noticed the front tires have uneven wear on the inside edges (Smooth near inner edge). Would this be just an alignment issue or could you attribute this wear to a particular suspension or steering component that may need replacing? Thanks.

Alignment could be a good reason but I would inspect the ball joints and tie rod ends (not so much tie rod ends but might as well be sure while its on jack stands).

My truck has kingpins instead of ball joints I believe.

Could be weak coil springs.
Someone could of swapped out the Straight 6 for a V8.

To much toe out on the front end.

Inspections of Worn Parts
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prechecks for your alignment.

Inspect the pivot point on the Independent front suspension ( IFS ) for play or worn parts.
Inspect the brackets and bolts above the pivot point on the Independent front suspension ( IFS ) for play or worn parts.
Inspect for worn parts or play, any of the following:
Inspect the tie rod ends.
Check radius arm bushings for wear or crack.
Check gear coupling assembly (aka rag joint) on the steering column rod for play.
Check the shaft and joint assembly on the steering column rod for play.
Check for play the drag link.
Inspect the front wheel. (the front wheel bearings for play)
Inspect the ball joint for wear.

Let us know what you found?

Have some one turn the steering wheel from side to side, and visual inspect the tie rod ends and other steering component part while steering wheel is moved side to side. This is a good way of to visualize and check for any worn parts (look for play).

I was inspecting the rag-joint on my 77 F150 and I noticed it was cracked and when I went to remove it about 1/3 of it broke off in my hand. This is not the typical rag-joint material I am used to, it was made of some kind of polymer not the cloth impregnated rubber rag-joints you typically see. Well this was an accident waiting to happen, so I am glad I found it now rather then later while driving/crashing.

Well actually I was standing inside my engine bay when I found the rag joint issue and I have not yet finished checking out the rest of the suspension/steering components.
