More Power Please

Hey guys,
Let me have it. I am looking for more power on a '94 7.3 Turbo IDI !!!!! What is the best bang for the buck? What can I do? I have already done intake with a K/N filter, and did a better downpipe into a Y and dual 3" Straight pipe. What more can I do without going propane.

First thing you need is gauges to monitor your exhaust gas temperature and boost pressure.....then give it more fuel.

What is a better downpipe?
Gauges, boost and pyrometer are a must before you start increasing the fuel.
Air intake work is also in order.
If you are in dusty conditions, get rid of the K&N.

Gregjy,

Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

Did you change the turbo outlet flange?

I replaced the pipe off the turbo to the exhaust. The stock one is sandwiched down where it goes past the firewall. So now it comes off the turbo and Y's into duel 3" pipes which dump down behind the rear axel. How much more power will I get by giving it more fuel? She is mainly a street driver although she does see the sand dunes too. I have never had a prob with K&N's I run them on all my vehicles as well as my parents and everyone else around here. People have told me that I will suck stuff through them on a turbo vehicle but I dont think they kept them properly cleaned and maintained. In all my years with them I swear by them.

The diesel especially with a turbo will suck back a lot more air than any gasser will, if your in the dunes, I wouldn't take the chance

As I said I have never had a problem. As long as you keep your K&N oiled up right and taken care of you wont have any problems. My buddy runs a desert truck with a turbo and never has problems and you will not see more dust than that.

A K&N was responsible for the early death of my last engine.
As soon as you get enough dust on the filter to soak up the oil, the rest goes straight through and chews up the rings and cylinders.

When the engine runs OK, but you dump a gallon of oil in it every 100 miles you will see what I mean.

As far as properly maintained, every day was not enough.

Yes you can do lots to make it run better, but you need gauges to monitor the engine.
If you don't know what you have for boost and EGT's, how can you adjust it?
The turbo will make enough boost to blow the head gaskets if you go to far.
R&R head gaskets is a 22 hour job plus parts, which is close to 2000 dollars total.

To much fuel and the EGT's will melt the pistons.
You don't even want to know how much that will cost to fix.

What size downpipe did you use?
Get a pyrometer with the thermo couple installed in the exhaust manifold.
Get a boost gauge.

Has the timing been adjusted?

The down pipe is a three inch I believe. I know the outlet is anyway. I was told that the turbo from the factory is not boosting much at all and infact was added by ford for more of a cooling thing than anything. Thats what ford here told me anyway. I am going to add guages hopefully by next weekend and then be looking at a way to boost everything. The timing is advanced like two degrees. It was retarded two when I got it and had that checked? Anyway, looking for as much more power as I can get without blowing the heads off it.......LOL
