Hi - I posted the below question in Misc forum under "Clutch, transmission, etc" but wasn't sure how many people read that forum so I though I would ask same question here. If that is against site rules I apoligize and moderator feel free to delete post. thanks
Hi all - I could use a little help. I have been having the blinking "off" overdrive problem with the hard shifting. Searched the old threads on this topic. I went to Aoto Zone and got there OBD II Scanner and drove around until light started blinking. Then I pulled over hooked up scanner and got code
PO174 system to lean - Bank 2
Looking up Ford codes on web 174 is "Oxygen sensor was slow in switching
Single, Right, or Rear HO2S - Fuel control"
My question is could this particular code be related to the blinking "off" light and hard shifting or is related to something else?
As a side note the only way I can get the code to show on scanner is to drive as above then shut off motor and turn key on as quickly as possible then hook up the scanner. If I turn key off then hook up scanner and wait for it to load up then turn key to on and check codes - as instructions say to do - I get no codes. Thanks for any advice.
The blinking overdrive and shift concerns are most likely the rear speed sensor(vss) on top of the rear diff.
The lean condition could be a couple of things
fuel filter
vacum tube leaks(chk the hose to pcv all the way to the throttle body)
leaky intake o-ring gaskets
or bad o2 sensors
Chk your air filter if using fram.

You mentioned code p0174...Sounds like you got your situation under control.. but you said you Looked up Ford codes on web. Where on earth can you find info on these codes. My book just says System adaptive fuel too lean (bank 2) you had more.....Hoping to find data on other codes too..
What does that mean?
Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 2 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 2 is generally the side of the engine that doesn't have cylinder #1.
Note: This DTC is very similar to P0171, and in fact your vehicle may show both codes at the same time.
Symptoms:
You will more than likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms such as a lack of power, detonation (spark knock), and/or a hesitation/surge on acceleration.
Causes A code P0174 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty.
Note: The use of "oiled" air filters (K&N, etc.) can cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled
There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor.
Possible SolutionsPossible solutions include:
In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling
Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary
Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure

You know, in my '96/'97 4.6L's and my 2001 V10, cleaning the MAF greatly improved the shifting.
Maybe the MAF is dirty, and it's throwing the tranny enough of a problem that the PCM doesn't like it. Or likewise, some other problem is causing the lean condition, but the tranny is getting more power/slippage than it should?
Aren't tranny/air-bag codes read by a different (better?) scanner than a "regular" code scanner?
Clean the MAF, and check for vacuum leaks.
There's always a first time some problem cropped up with a "lean" code and causes the tranny to have fits.
Hi all - just an update. I cleaned the MAF and installed a new VSS. Still have the blinking overdrive light and hard shifting after I drive a while. Guess the cheap fix won't work Next stop is dealer to read the codes. I did disconnect battery for a while after installing VSS.
Can't remember what year but there is also a transmission output speed sensor in the tailhousing (not the vss on the side) but on top. Thought the speed sensor in the rear was for the abs?
Just today my '95 f350 460 started the O/D blinking. I had just gotten done cutting off the "horns" in the air intake, and thought what the f@#! went wrong! In addition to O/D light, tranny started to shift really hard and the speedo went dead. I pulled the #8 fuse and it was blown to pieces!! A guy had a 20 amp in it where it should have been a 15 (but dont see how that could of been any harm). However, all my problems are now gone. Truck shifts great, no blinking, and speedo works. Don't know if this is relevant to your problem but its worth a try.
