I have a 69 f100 custom cab and am looking at putting in a new stereo and speakers. From what I can find the only radios that you can buy are the ones that don't have the individual tuning and volume *****, the ones I see just have buttons (I have seen some in a magazine that are copies of the originals with the ***** but they are quite pricey). Though I like the looks of the older style better I am willing to switch over to the kind with the buttons. Will putting in this kind made me have to cut the two brackets that held up the original radio off? If so then what will hold the radio up?
Does anyone know if they still make radios that have *****, but are still as good sounding as the the newer style, and I'm talking about at wal-mart or best but not a magazine specific for Ford trucks.
Also I don't really understand radios and speakers very well so I was wondering if someone could give me some suggestions. I saw in an add a radio for $130, it was a 50 watt with a cd player with detachable face. Also I saw some 170 watt speakers for $30 dollars a pair. I do not need a seperate amp or anything like that. I listen to rock only pretty much(no rap) so I don't need an extreme amount of base, I do like to listen to it loud sometimes with the base all the way up and not have any of the vibration like the old speakers had. Will this combination work well?
thanks for any advice
brad

JVC sells a digital stereo Cassette that fit nicely into my '70 without any alterations to the faceplate. I only had to sand the stereo a little on the sides (plastic) and it fit right in. If you are interested I can get you the model number. I know it is 22 watts per channel. :-)

Brad, you might want to check out this site http://www.antiqueautomobileradio.com/ If I remember correctly they take OEM radios and make stereos out of them. I got the address off of a card I that I had. I think I saw him at Autofest in Charlotte last year.

Bite the bullet and close your eyes, Brad. Cut the brackets and slide in an MP3 player. 125 songs means infinite variety. Looks pretty good too. You'll get over the pain of cutting the ear brackets.

that website for the company that switches the original radios over to a stereo looked pretty interesting. what are their prices like?
Also if I did decide to put in the newer style stereo and cut the brackets what would I have to use to hold the stereo in there?
thanks for all your responses

Check out Custom Auto Sound at http://www.custom-autosound.com They sell radios to fit the old cars and truck without having to cut the opening. And they also have CD changers that work with their products.

Brad, Did you check the site for pricing? The guy is at Autofest this weekend in Charlotte NC, click on his trade show link, they may be coming near you.

I just bent my brackets backward and cut out the housing to fit my stereo. Most stereo's come with some universal pieces that you can use to help it fit. I bought an Alpine 3 disc in dash reciever and it came with a long metal bar with holes in it that you could screw it on to the back of the stereo and mount the other end to the top of the dash and that holds the back up, and then the front is held by the original housing. Mine fit pretty good, but i am getting a new player myself because the new ones are MP3 compatable. As far as speakers go, If you want a good combination of bass and good hard rock sound, I would go for a pair of 6x9's. I would look at Alpine, Sony, Kenwood, Pioneer, or Infinity because in my opinion you can't really go wrong with any of those. I got a pair of Kenwood 6x9's in my doors, no amp, and it would shake the cab pretty well and it sounded pretty good. I am also going to get a new pair of 6x9's and i have been leaning toward the Alpine's for about $100, which really isn't bad for that size of speakers. Hope this helps

Not sure how much you want to spend on a stereo. Here is a site that I'm looking at to get a stereo for my '72 F250. http://truckstuff.org/carstereo/car_radio_specials.htm

Good Luck.

you guys that cut your dash apart are gonna be sorry. It makes your truck trashy. Anyone can take the easy way out..... how about being patient and taking the time to not damage your truck. There are only so many 1970's F-series that haven't been deflowered.

You know, I don't like the idea of cutting the dash or alot of other things guys do to their trucks. But that's just the point, it's THEIR truck. You can have your opinion but far be it for you to tell them they are "going to be sorry". What are you going to do? Go spank them? Lighten up. You don't like it, that's fine. If you want to say, that in your OPINION, it's trashy, then fine. But there is no room on this board for being rude to others.

What do you mean we can't be rude? Man that takes all the fun out of it. LOL IMO we are all just a little to PC. If what you say offends someone else, then oh darn. Maybe their Mommies and Daddies should have told them what the world was really like instead of telling them it is all flowery and nice. Makes me wanna yack. Now that is MHO. Have a Nice day, or don't. Makes no difference to me.

But I will agree that it is their truck do what you want. I hate to tell you all what i am going to do with mine. LOL
